The Fall Into Sin Key Text Romans 7:24 NASB “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?” “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” NLT

The Fall Into Sin Initial Words {209} The result of the Fall in Eden is not encouraging. It would be all but hopeless were it not for the promise of the atonement in our behalf through Christ. We need to see what has happened to us, because only when we see ourselves as we really are will the glory of the Cross reach us in its saving beauty and power.

The Fall Into Sin Quick Look 1. Sin Results in Rebellion (Genesis 3:6) 2. Sin Results in Spiritual Death (Romans 3:10) 3. Sin Results in Physical, Eternal Death (Genesis 2:17)

The Fall Into Sin 1. Sin Results in Rebellion Genesis 3:6 NKJV “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took the fruit and ate.”

1. Sin Results in Rebellion In the Garden {210} The word rebellion is not used in Genesis 1-3 to describe the sin of Adam and Eve, but the idea is nevertheless present. Not only did they openly violate the command, they shifted loyalties. Eve listened to the reasoning of the enemy and thought it more reliable than the explicit word of God.

1. Sin Results in Rebellion In the Garden {210} She concluded that the divine command was too restrictive and that in order to achieve the highest potential she had to claim independence from her Creator. This was rebellion. Adam listened to the voice of his wife instead of the voice of God and joined her in the rebellion.

1. Sin Results in Rebellion In the Garden {210} Adam’s and Eve’s rebellion brought an end to the kind of intimate relationship they had first enjoyed with God. Their interpersonal relationship was no longer harmonious (Gen 3:12). God and human were no longer united in love and harmony. What was needed was an act of reconciliation.

The Fall Into Sin 2. Rebellion Results in Spiritual Death Romans 3:10 NKJV “There is none righteous, no, not one.”

2. Rebellion Results in Spiritual Death Natural Heart {214} Sin damaged the inner life of human being. Because of the Fall, the human “heart is deceitful above all things….” (Jer 17:9 NIV) The “heart,” considered in the Bible to be the inviolable center of human being, is now defined as essentially deceitful, insidious, and in itself unreliable.

This inner corruption and stupefaction expresses itself in sinful acts against self, against others, and against God. “ ‘For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.’ ” Matt 15:19 NKJV Humans need a way out of the terrible situation brought about by sin. 2. Rebellion Results in Spiritual Death Natural Heart {214}

The Fall Into Sin 3. Results in Physical, Eternal Death Genesis 2:17 NKJV “ ‘But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’ ”

3. Rebellion Results in Physical and Eternal Death Endangered Species {216} God’s words to Adam indicate that death is the result of rebellion against God. Because of its connection with sin, death is not a simple biological phenomenon but a fearful awareness of our eternal separation from the Source of Life—a separation that leads to eternal extinction.

The phenomenon of sickness, another result of sin, is described as coming “near the grave” (Ps 88:3 NIV). The incursion of death in daily human existence is part of the human predicament directly associated with phenomenon of sin. Humans needed Someone who could give them life by dying in their place. 3. Rebellion Results in Physical and Eternal Death Endangered Species {216}

The Fall Into Sin Final Words {220} “The Fall was an act of rebellion against God, and it resulted in spiritual, physical, and eternal death of sinners. Because the results were so bad, something drastic had to be done; otherwise, we would have no hope. As we shall see, the Cross was that drastic answer to the problem caused by the Fall.
