Atonement and the Cross of Christ Our Goal {181} As you study the meaning of Christ’s substitutionary sacrifice, be moved toward a greater commitment to the One who suffered so much for you, so that whether you live or die, you can do so in peace.

Atonement and the Cross of Christ Lesson 11, December 13 Atonement and the Cross of Christ Lesson 11, December 13

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice Key Text Hebrews 7:25 NIV “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice Initial Words {313} “ ‘Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth’ ” (Isa 45:22 NIV). That’s the message of Christ’s death on the Cross. And that redemptive efficacy is available to us through Christ’s work of mediation. We’ll examine the wonderful benefits of Christ’s high-priestly ministry in order to better understand God’s saving grace.

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice Quick Look 1. Mediation and Atonement (Hebrew 2:17) 2. Mediation in the Heavenly Sanctuary (Hebrews 7:25, 25) 3. Mediation and the Work of the Spirit (Romans 8:11)

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice 1. Mediation and Atonement Hebrews 2:17 NIV “For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

1. Mediation and Atonement Relationship {316} Hebrews 2:17 uses the verb to make atonement (NIV) in the present tense, suggesting that Christ’s work of reconciliation continues in His high-priestly ministry. On the cross Christ obtained salvation for all; through His work as Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary He is applying the benefits of the Cross to those who believe in Him.

1. Mediation and Atonement Relationship {316} Without the mediation of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, the atoning effectiveness and power of the Cross would not be available to sinners. His mediation is rooted in the Cross. This mediation is not a supplement to Calvary but the unveiling of the depth and permanent atoning power of His sacrificial death.

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice 2. Mediation in the Heavenly Sanctuary Romans 7:25, 26 Amplified “He is able to save to the uttermost (completely, perfectly, finally, and for all eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for them. [Here is] the High Priest [perfectly adapted] to our needs….”

2. Mediation in the Heavenly Sanctuary Resurrection and Ascension {314} The death of Christ would not have had any atoning or forgiving power had it not been followed by the resurrection of the Lord. His resurrection and ascension mean: (2) He permanently united to God those who will put their faith in His sacrificial death. (3) His defeat of evil powers on the cross was final. (1) He finished the work He came to do on earth.

Christ began His intercessory work immediately after His enthronement. The good news is that Jesus is still working on behalf of His people. Christ must remain in heaven “until the times of restitution of all things” (Acts 3:21). The ultimate restitution is still in the future, and Christ’s intercessory work is leading toward it. 2. Mediation in the Heavenly Sanctuary After Enthronement {318}

Out of His love, God decided to preserve the life He created in spite of its contamination with sin. “ ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being’ ” (Acts 17:28 NIV). This preservation is not the result of mechanical laws working independently of God. Although sinners deserve death, their natural life is preserved through God’s grace, all made possible through the Cross. 2. Mediation in the Heavenly Sanctuary Preservation of Life {320}

Benefits of Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice 3. Mediation and the Work of the Spirit Romans 8:11 NKJV “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

3. Mediation and the Work of the Spirit Pentecostal Outpouring {318} Jesus promised the disciples that He will request from the Father another Counselor (John 14:16, 17). At Pentecost Peter interpreted the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as indicating that Christ had begun His intercessory work on behalf of those who believed in Christ (Acts 2:33).

The Spirit would ‘reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8). It is the task of the Spirit to make sinful human beings fully aware of their sin, guilt, and separation from God. At the same time He points them to the Cross of Christ as the only way out of their desperate condition. 3. Mediation and the Work of the Spirit The Gift’s Function {322}

Without this work of the Spirit, the Cross becomes ineffective in itself. But precisely because of the Cross that the Spirit is active in the world, constantly pointing sinners to Jesus for their salvation. 3. Mediation and the Work of the Spirit The Gift’s Function {322}

Manuscript Releases 7:166 Final Words {324} “He places in the golden censer His merits and efficiency, that He may offer them with the sincere prayers of His people. How essential, then, that we pray much; … for they are mingled with the fragrance of Christ’s righteousness. Our voices is not the only voice heard. Before it reaches the ear of God, it blends with the voice of Christ, whom the Father always hears.”
