2 The Puritan Legacy Puritan – broad term, referring to a number of Protestant groups that sought to “purify” the Church of England. The first English Puritans landed in 1620, on the tip of Cape Cod, just before Christmas.

3 The Puritans were single-minded visionaries convinced of the rightness of their beliefs, but they were also practical and businesslike. Many Puritans were persecuted for their beliefs and fled England for Holland and, ultimately, for North America

4 Many historians feel that the Puritan ethics of thrift, hard work, and self – sufficiency contributed to the success of the New World.

5 Puritan Beliefs Puritans believed that Adam and Eve’s sin had damned most people for all eternity.

6 They also believed that Jesus Christ had been sent to earth to save particular people, known as the “elect”. It was difficult to know for certain if one was saved or damned, so Puritans tried to behave in as exemplary a manner as possible.

7 Puritans believed that the Bible was the literal word of God. Reading the Bible was a necessity for all Puritans, as was the ability to understand theological debates.

8 Characteristics of Puritan Writing The Bible provided a model for Puritan writing: a conception of each individual life as a journey to salvation. Puritans saw direct connections between Biblical events and their lives

9 Puritans used writing to explore their inner and outer lives for signs of the workings of God. Diaries and histories were the most common forms of expression in Puritan society; in them writers described their workings of God.

10 Puritans favored plain style Stressed clarity of expression and avoided complicated figures of speech. Factual writing

11 Puritan values found in Literature Predestination Strong work ethic Literacy and education Community effort (as opposed to individualism) Man’s inherent sinfulness God’s omnipotence Wilderness as the devil’s province (Puritans saw nature as God’s creation but feared the disorder of the frontier and viewed Indians as savages.)
