6 StopPreviousNext 6 What are digital images? Digital images are pictures in an electronic format. You can take digital images using a digital camera. The images can be downloaded (copied) onto a computer. Once the images are downloaded to the computer, you can  share them with family and friends  send them as an attachment to an email  display them in an online photo album In this workbook, we will look at how to  attach a picture to an email  manage your pictures  display pictures on an online photo album such as Flickr

7 StopPreviousNext Attach a picture to an email The most common action people want to do with pictures is to share them with family and friends. The easiest way to do this is to attach them to an email. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Write your email message. Workbook 4 shows you how to do this. Move your mouse over Attach a file in the Menu bar. Do 1 click. The My Pictures folder will open. 7

8 StopPreviousNext 5. 6. Move your mouse over the folder with the pictures you want to use. Do 2 clicks. The pictures are shown here. 7. 8. Move your mouse over the picture you would like to attach. Do 2 clicks. The picture is now attached to your email. You can send your email. 8

9 StopPreviousNext Attach more than one picture to an email Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Move your mouse over Attach a file. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the first picture. Do 1 click. Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard. Move your mouse over the next picture. Do 1 click. Repeat steps 6 to 7 for all of the pictures that you want to attach. 8. 9. 10. Let go of the Shift key. Move your mouse over Open. Do 1 click. The pictures are now attached to your email. 9

10 StopPreviousNext 10 Note – file size It is important to be aware of the size of the picture file. If you send large picture files, they may overload the email box of the person you are sending them to. Some pictures are very large, high quality images that are good for printing. While they are great quality, they are too large to email. On page 22 we will show you how to resize your pictures.

11 StopPreviousNext Manage your pictures Pictures are saved on the computer in the My Pictures folder. Look at pictures on the computer Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Move your mouse over the Start button. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over My Pictures. Do 1 click. 11

12 StopPreviousNext Open the folders and see the pictures Have a go 1. 2. Move your mouse over the My Pictures folder. Do 2 clicks. You will see the pictures in the folder. 12

13 StopPreviousNext 13 Read this There are a number of pictures in the My Pictures folder. There are three ways you can look at the pictures. You can see them  listed in the folder as shown here or  in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer or  in a slide show.

14 StopPreviousNext Look at a picture in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse over the picture you want to look at. Do 2 clicks. You will see the picture in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. To return to the My Pictures folder 1.Press the Esc key on the keyboard. 14

15 StopPreviousNext Look at pictures in a slide show Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move the mouse over View as a slide show. Do 1 click. You will see the pictures one at a time as a slide show. Return to the My Pictures folder 1. Press the Esc key on the keyboard. 15

16 StopPreviousNext Download pictures from your digital camera Look at images in the camera Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Turn your digital camera on. Plug in the USB cable into your camera and the USB port on your computer. A box will appear. Move your mouse over Open folder to view files. Do 2 clicks. Move your mouse over the DCIM Folder. Do 2 clicks. There is one picture in this folder. 16

17 StopPreviousNext 17 8. 9. To look at the picture move your mouse over the file name. Do 2 clicks. You will see the picture. Close the picture 1. 2. Move your mouse over Close tool. Do 1 click.

18 StopPreviousNext 18 Download pictures from the camera to your computer Copy the picture from your camera to the My Picture folder on the computer. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Move your mouse over the name of the picture. Do 1 click. Move the mouse over Copy this file. Do 1 click.

19 StopPreviousNext You will see a box with folders listed. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Move the mouse over My Pictures. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the folder where the digital image is to be pasted. Do 1 click. Move the mouse over Copy. 10. Do 1 click. You will have a copy of the digital image on your computer. The original picture file is still in the camera. 19

20 StopPreviousNext Rename pictures Pictures on the camera have a name made of letters and numbers. To make it easier to know the picture, you can give it a new name. You will do this after you copy them onto the computer. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Move the mouse over the picture’s computer name. Do 1 click on the Right mouse button. You will see a Menu. Move the mouse over Rename. Do 1 click. See the picture name has a box around it. You will delete the file name but not the file extension e.g..jpg 20

21 StopPreviousNext 6. 7. 8. 9. Move the mouse to the beginning of the text. Do 1 click. Press the delete key on the keyboard until the name is removed. Remember to leave.jpg Type in the new name e.g. Flowers. 10. If you delete.jpg type it in again. 11. Press the Enter key on the keyboard to save this name. 21

22 StopPreviousNext 22 Resize pictures Pictures can have a large file size. It is recommended that the picture files are resized before attaching them to an email. You will need Microsoft Image Resizer for XP software on your computer. Go to page 46 for instructions on how to download this software to your computer. Your trainer will do this for you. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Move the mouse over the start button. Do 1 click. Move the mouse over the My Picture folder. Do 1 click.

23 StopPreviousNext 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Move the mouse over the folder where the pictures are located. Do 2 clicks. Move the mouse over the picture you want to resize. Do 1 click with the Right mouse button. You will see a menu. 10. Move the mouse over Resize Pictures. 11. Do 1 click. 12. You will see a box. The first option – Small – is suitable for emails. 13. Move your mouse over OK. 14. Do 1 click. 23

24 StopPreviousNext 24 You will see two versions of the picture called Russia. One is the original Russia-c.jpg and the second is Russia-c (Small).jpg

25 StopPreviousNext Delete pictures Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Move the mouse over the picture. Do 1 click on the right mouse button. A menu appears. Move the mouse over Delete. Do 1 click. The picture has now been deleted. 25

26 StopPreviousNext Online photo album – Flickr Flickr is a photo album website. It is free and anyone can use it. You can upload (copy) your pictures to your Flickr account. Then you can share them with anyone in the world or you can make them private and share them with the people you choose. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Move the mouse over the address bar. Do 1 click. Type in the web address www.flickr.com Press the Enter key on your keyboard. You will see the Flickr website. 26

27 StopPreviousNext Sign in to your Flickr Account You will need to have a Flickr account to upload your pictures. Instructions on setting up your Flickr account are on page 41. Have a go 1. 2. Move your mouse over Sign in. Do 1 click. You will see the Yahoo sign in screen or you can choose to sign in with Google. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Move your mouse over Yahoo ID. Do 1 click. Type in your Yahoo account name. Press the Tab key on your keyboard. Type in your Password. 27

28 StopPreviousNext 8. 9. Move your mouse over Sign in. Do 1 click. You are now signed in to your Flickr account. 28

29 StopPreviousNext Upload pictures to Flickr You can upload or copy your pictures in to your Flickr account. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. Move your mouse over Upload your first photos. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Choose photos and videos. Do 1 click. 29

30 StopPreviousNext 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. You will see a list of folders. Move your mouse over the My Pictures folder. Do 2 clicks. Move your mouse over the folder where your pictures are stored. Do 2 clicks. 10. Move your mouse over the picture you want to upload to Flickr. 11. Do 2 clicks. 30

31 StopPreviousNext Make your pictures private Decide if you want to keep your Flickr pictures private. Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Move your mouse over the round button next to Private. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the box next to Visible to friends. Do 1 click. or/and Move your mouse over Visible to family. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Upload Photos and Videos. Do 1 click. 31

32 StopPreviousNext 32 The picture is currently being uploaded. See the bar showing the progress of the picture. The picture has now been uploaded to Flickr. The next step is to add information about the picture so that other people can find it. This information includes titles, descriptions and tags.

33 StopPreviousNext Add a description Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Move your mouse over add a description. Do 1 click. Move your mouse into the box under description (see the picture on the next page). Do 1 click. Type in a description of the picture. e.g. This is a picture of Saint Basil’s church in Moscow. 33

34 StopPreviousNext 34 Add tags Tags are words used to describe a picture when you do a picture search. Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse over the box under Tags. Do 1 click. Type in a word or words that describe the picture. E.g.russia church or “russian church”. Save your additions Have a go 1. 2. Move your mouse over SAVE. Do 1 click.

35 StopPreviousNext 35 You will be returned to Your Photostream page of your Flickr account. This page show your pictures. See the message Only friends and family can see this photo.

36 StopPreviousNext Organise your Flickr account Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse over the down arrow next to You in the menu bar. You can create sets of photos and galleries. You can also upload (copy) your pictures from here. 36

37 StopPreviousNext Your Home page You can use Home on the Flickr menu bar or Your Photostream as your home page for Flickr. Have a go 1. 2. or 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Move your mouse over Home on the Flickr menu bar. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the down arrow next toYou in the Flickr menu bar. Do 1 click. A list will appear. Move your mouse over Your Photostream. Do 1 click. 37

38 StopPreviousNext Search for pictures There are several ways that you can search for pictures on Flickr. Have a go 1. 2. 3. or 4. 5. or 6. 7. 8. There are featured photos on the Home page. Move your mouse over one of the photos. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Explore / Places. Do 1 click Use the Search box. Move your mouse over the box next to Search. Do 1 click. Type in your search words e.g. saint basil’s church moscow. 38

39 StopPreviousNext 9.Move your mouse over Search. 10. Do 1 click. or Press the Enter key on your keyboard. 11. See the search results page. 12. Move your mouse over the picture you want to look at. 13. Do 1 click. 14. You will see a larger view of the picture. 39

40 StopPreviousNext Set up your Flickr account If you have a Yahoo account you can use your sign in name and password for Flickr or Google. You will still have to create your Flickr account. Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse over Create Your Account. Do 1 click. You will see Sign in to Yahoo. 40

41 StopPreviousNext You have two choices  if you already have a Yahoo account account, or  if you need to create a Yahoo account. If you have a Yahoo account Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse over Yahoo ID. Do 1 click. Type in your Yahoo ID – the first part of your Yahoo email name e.g. victorianet328. 4. 5. Move your mouse over Password. Do 1 click. Type in your 6. 7. password. Move your mouse over Sign in. Do 1 click. 41 Make sure you do not have the box ticked next to - Keep me signed in. Remember this computer may be in a public place.

42 StopPreviousNext 8. 9. You will see a Flickr screen. Move your mouse over the box under Choose your new Flickr name. 10. Do 1 click. 11. Type in the name for your Flickr account. 12. Move your mouse over CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. 13. Do 1 click. You will see your Flickr account open on the screen. 42

43 StopPreviousNext If you do not have a Yahoo account you will need to create one. Create a Yahoo account for Flickr Have a go 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Move your mouse over Sign Up. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Name. Do 1 click. Type in your first name. Press the Tab key on your keyboard. Type in your family name. Answer all of the questions in the sign up form. Type in the wavy letters and numbers that are shown in the box. 43

44 StopPreviousNext 44 10. Move your mouse over Create My Account. 11. Do 1 click. You will now see the Congratulations screen. This screen shows your answers to some of the questions. 12. Print this page. Note it does not show your password. You now have a Yahoo account.

45 StopPreviousNext Go to the Flickr website Have a go 1.Move your mouse over Continue. You will see the Yahoo email screen. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Log out of the Yahoo email page. Go to the Flickr website. Move your mouse to the Address bar. Do 1 click. Type in www.flickr.com Press the Enter key on the keyboard. You will see the Flickr home page. Follow the instructions on page 40 to complete the Flickr account sign up process. 45

46 StopPreviousNext 46 Download Microsoft Image Resizer for XP Have a go 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse to the address bar. Do 1 click. Type in this web address www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx or http://tiny.cc/powertoys 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Press the Enter key on your keyboard. You will see the Microsoft website. Scroll down the page until you see Image Resizer link on the right side of the window. Move your mouse over ImageResizer.exe Do 1 click.

47 StopPreviousNext 9.You will see a grey box. 10. Move your mouse over Run. 11. Do 1 click. The program will start to download to your computer. 12. A new box will appear. 13. Move your mouse over Run. 14. Do 1 click. 15. Move your mouse over Install. 16. Do 1 click. 47

48 StopPreviousNext 48 17. You will see this box Preparing to Install. 18. The program continues to download. The final screen is the Finish screen. 19. Move your mouse over Finish. 20. Do 1 click.
