Welcome Parents & Friends 2 nd Grade Music Showcase Wednesday, May 4, 2011 “Music Makers Around the World”

What happens in Music Class? We sing We move We listen We play We create

In second grade we sing songs from all around the world and work on: Matching pitch with our voice Singing melodies unaccompanied (accapella) all together and at the same time (unison) Playing accompaniments to the melodies of songs on many different kinds of percussion instruments

This year we have listened and identified instruments from other cultures and learned to sing songs from different regions of the 7 continents. We continue to discover, explore, and experience 1. RHYTHM 2. MELODY 3. FORM (organization of music) 4. TEXTURE (the layers of music) 5. TONE COLOR (the sounds of music) 6. EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES OF MUSIC

ALPINE SONG An Austrian folksong Mrs. Mitchell’s class is featured on instruments playing a chord accompaniment. Can you hear the fermatas in the melody? A fermata is a symbol placed over a note to show that it should be held longer than its normal value.

AFRICA Tue, Tue – A song from Ghana featuring Ms. Butcher’s class on a variety of percussion instruments playing an accompaniment. The meaning of this song is: Come, buy my rice cakes. Playing a variety of percussion instruments helps develop gross motor coordination and it’s fun!

Seven Jumps a German folksong Our voice has been our primary instrument that sings the melody. In this song, Mrs. Dolan’s class will demonstrate how they can play parts of a melody on barred instruments. 7 students will be showing you some of the more unique percussion instruments we have in the music lab.

Native American Indians The Canoe Song features Mrs. VanHeest’s class playing an instrumental accompaniment. Ensemble playing teaches students to listen, blend and balance with one another. Can you hear our decrescendo?

Los Colores De La Primavera In this song the 2 nd graders learned how to sing in Spanish. The translation for this song is The colors of spring. The colors that are very pretty. The colors of spring. The colors, I like the colors.

Students further explore composers and learn about different styles of music. Students learn to read and play music on recorders using “Recorder Rainbows” program.

Wang U Ger “Chinese Fishing Song” Featuring Mrs. Kubinski’s class on Orff Instruments: Improvising (making it up as they go along) Orff instruments are: xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels with removable bars named after German music educator & composer Carl Orff. 2 nd graders learn about notes that hold longer than 1 beat. One of our goals in this performance is to watch the conductor! Dotted half note
