What can be done to make classroom management more effective? Consider how these areas can effect classroom management: A B C D Rapport & Communications Attitude & Expectations EnvironmentMaterials & Teaching

A Rapport & Communications: Establish a good rapport between the learners right from the start. Involve the learners by negotiating the syllabus with them. Be clear about what you want from them; avoid ambitious terms and vague language. Find out what your learners’ needs and interests are. Observe carefully, so as to detect misbehaviour at an early stage. Act immediately to stop inappropriate behaviour, apply eye contact and non verbal signals.

B Attitude & Expectations: Get your learners to establish their own class ground rules. Identify your students expectations. Do not develop classroom rules you are unwilling to enforce. Explain college rules and regulations carefully. Be fare - involve all learners and treat them with equal respect

C Environment: Vary the layout of the classroom. Where possible decorate the walls with examples of the students’ work and useful language or information. Modify the classroom activities e.g. pair-work, group-work or whole class in a circle. Be aware of: the temperature, lack of or excess of air, number of student in the room make sure you know what the health and safety rules are

D Materials & Teaching: Apply variety in your approach. Select materials that appeal to your learners’ interests and preferred learning style. Apply differentiation; so as to allow all your learners to obtain a sense of achievement. Hand over to the learners; get them to work things out for themselves rather than explaining it to them. Show a genuine interest in your learners’ progress

An attention seeking and disruptive student with a limited attention span A reluctant student who never does any homework A shy student newly arrived in the country Two students who are always chatting and giggling in class A student who has shown disrespect towards another student A student who is struggling and getting frustrated about his/her progress How would you work with the following?
