Fading Cloth El Anatsui Ghanaian 2005

El Anatsui was born in 1944 in Onyako, a town near Ghana. Born while his country was a British colony known as the Gold Coast Ghana became the first independent political state in sub- Saharan Africa while El Anatsui was a teenager. Witnessing this shift had an impact on the development on El Anatsui’s mature art. During his years as a student, he found it necessary to understand local artistic traditions in order to express what it meant to be African in post-colonial society. El Anatsui

Fading Cloth Fading Cloth is an enormous sculptural wall-hanging. Over ten feet high and twenty one feet wide Consists of countless bottle tops that are flattened and and fastened together using copper wire Made up of various shades of gold and is complimented by reds, blues, and silvers El Anatsui used vivid reds on top subtle gold and cream colors toward the center. From a distance, the colors come together to create large swaths of color Cloth can be draped and folded in many different ways
