Sample #1 Despite the multitude of evidence that shows how unhealthy restaurant meals are, some opponents say that big efforts are being made to offer more healthy options. The vice president of the National Restaurant Association, Joan Rector McGlockton, recently said, “The restaurant industry is employing a wide range of strategies to play a positive role in food and healthy living issues, including advocating for a national nutrition information standard and adding more healthful options to menus” (Pittman 2). She also points out that many restaurant chains have signed on to a program called Kids LiveWell (Pittman 2). While this sounds like good progress, the Kids LiveWell site reveals far-from-ideal requirements of restaurants: offer one 600- calories-or-less kids’ meal, offer one 200-calories-or-less side item, have nutrition information available for the healthy meals, and label healthy items on the menu (1). This is an excellent demonstration of how restaurants are not doing nearly enough for diners who want to eat healthy. Two healthy entrees in an entire menu do not indicate that restaurants are making diners’ well- being a priority.
