1. Madeleine and John Jacob Astor

2. The Wedding
Though John Jacob Astor IV and Madeleine Force were eventually married, there was quite a struggle to find a pastor willing to wed them
Astor offered a multitude of money, including $1,000 to pastor Rev. Dr. Edward C. Johnson in order to convince him to wed the two, but was turned down due of fear of criticism and public opinion
Rev. Joseph Lambert agreed to wed John and Madeleine, ended up resigning his position in the church after receiving so much hate and criticism for his “disgusting actions”

3. A Honeymoon
The honeymoon consisted of a trip to Egypt and a trip to Paris, France
The honeymoon was to escape the gossip and scandals that had spawned back in New York about their marriage
This honeymoon was ended when they decided to return to New York so Madeleine could give birth to their son in America
The closest ship leaving New York happened to be the “Unsinkable” Titanic

4. Aboard the Titanic
The Astors boarded the Titanic on Wednesday April 10th, in Cherbourg, France on ticket 17757, in C62/64 (cabin lettering)
Their first-class ticket cost £224
Madeleine boarded with her maid Rosalie Bidois, her private nurse Caroline Louise Endres (occupying cabin C45), and her pet Airedale Terrier “Kitty”
John boarded with his manservant Victor Robbins

5. Disaster Strikes
When the Titanic struck an iceberg in the frigid Atlantic waters, John quickly went to investigate what had happened
He reported back to Madeleine, telling her “the damage didn’t appear serious”
Later, as people were gathering on the decks, it is commonly noted that Mr. and Mrs. Astor sat on mechanical horses in the gym
While in the gym, Mr. Astor took a pen knife, and cut open an extra life vest, to show Madeleine what they were actually made of

6. Survival
John helped Madeleine and her maid and nurse aboard lifeboat four, however he was not allowed to board with them
John perished, along with their beloved dog, Kitty
Madeleine, Rosalie, Caroline, and the rest of lifeboat four were saved and were picked up by the Carpathia, another ship
