9 Limbic System Paleomammalian brain A complex set of brain structures that lies on both sides of the thalamus, right under the cerebrum. 1.Collection of structures from the telencephalon, diencephalon and mesencephalon. 2.Includes the hippocampus, amygdala, anterior thalamic nuclei, septum, habenula, limbic cortex and fornix. 3.Supports a variety of functions, including emotion, behavior, motivation and long term memory, and olfaction. 4.Primarily responsible for our emotional life. 5.Critical role in the formation of memories.
