Indians have been producing corn, wheat, cotton, and cattle in these territories. Their success, as with any farmers, depended on the rain fall. The president of The State Board Agriculture wrote in 1907 “Agriculture is and will be for years to come if not forever the leading industry in our state.” When thousands of people raced to unassigned land, agriculture moved swiftly toward becoming the basis of Oklahoma economy.

Farming Farming in Oklahoma did not become very important until after 1889. When thousands of people raced to unassigned land, agriculture moved swiftly toward becoming the basis of Oklahoma economy. Federal census reported that between 1890 an 1900 the number of farms increased from 8,826 to 108,000.

Livestock Feed The top of the sorghum cane was made into feed. The steam was used to make sorghum molasses, a sweetener. Settlers grew oats and maize

Cotton 1889 farmers were just learning what would grow well in that territory. Cotton is a banner crop in Oklahoma this crop has been tested for several years in succession in the two territories and the practical grower has reached the conclusion that cotton can be cultivated with profit in the new state. 1990s cotton has consistently ranked within the top 3 or 4 cash crops. Most cotton is grown in the southwestern part of the state.

Boll weevil The beetles spreads from Central America and Mexico to Texas in 1890s, first arriving there in 1894. Most destructive cotton pest in North America. Estimated that about 90% of the cotton forms in Brazil are now infested. Farmers eventually moved the plants further apart, the additional heat killed developing weevils.

Crops Corn was an ideal crop for a largely self-sufficient family in the early years of settlement. Farmers produced a wide variety of crops including corn, cotton, winter wheat, oats, milo maize, potatoes, peanuts, cowpeas, alfalfa, wild hay, and others. Most farmers planted some corn, and by 1910 more than five million acres were grown.
