2 Context 52 students on role Over last 3 years there has been a significant rise in the pupil numbers. o Raising of Participation Age. o Improvements in the provision offered. o Strong retention from year 11. The last two years, in particular. o Rise in external students from local schools. o More students being granted the option of a year 14. Five classes, organised largely by age and ability, with some further streaming for individual needs. Successful partnerships with a number of colleges including BSDC, The Joseph Wright Centre, Rodbaston College, TORC Vocational Centre. Wealth of community links such as Trent and Dove Housing, Stapenhill Horticultural Centre, The Kingfisher Project, Abbottsholme School and St Mary’s Church.

3 Achievement Strengths Wide range of accreditation opportunities ranging from Personal Progress, Entry Level 1 to 3 qualifications, Functional Skills Level 1 and 2. 2013-14 pilot year for Functional Skills in English and Maths. o English 89% achieved predicted level. o Maths 91% achieved predicted level. Aim SEFL, Vocational Suite of Accreditation, has increased significantly. City and Guilds Level 1 Photography course. Year 14, 10 students achieved AIM Award in Independent Living. WJEC GCSE Art 2013-14, 2 Key Stage 5 students achieved Grade D. Highly personalised curriculum offering vocational courses, college placements, comprehensive work experience programme, many enterprise opportunities, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and National Citizen Service. Destination data- 19 leavers o 47% Pathways Courses at FE colleges, o 32% to Level 1 Vocational Courses o 11% to specialist colleges o 5% to Princes Trust and 5% awaiting specialist provision

4 Achievement Areas of Continued Development Continue to review accreditation. Students to have ownership of the level at which they are working and how they can progress. Use of diagnostic OCR assessments in Functional Skills. Intervention group for students with ASD as their primary need, to increase the number of students achieving their English targets. Further develop links with mainstream schools through our leadership of the East Staffordshire Consortium and the SENCo network in East Staffordshire.

5 Teaching Strengths KS5 Teaching and Learning Conference- November 2014 o 17 lessons observed o 8 outstanding o 9 good o 2 required improvement. SLT learning walk 13/1/15 reported no RI or inadequate lessons. Teaching and learning best where linked to preparing students for adult life and developing independence skills. All lesson observations of enterprise and vocational studies showed good and outstanding teaching and learning. College opportunities well matched to the students’ interests, and build in opportunities for transition. Marking scheme used consistently throughout department and effective feedback is given. Work moderated through formal exam and accredited procedures, department work scrutiny, analysis and moderation.

6 Teaching Strengths Curriculum continually reviewed and enhanced to ensure it is flexible and responsive to student’s needs. Curriculum is person-centred, allowing students’ to make choices, take responsibility for own learning, and allow time, space and freedom to make their own connections. Planning monitored to ensure students are given varied, relevant and exciting experiences. Opportunities given to develop work skills through a range of enterprise projects including the running of the Pit Stop Café, selling eggs throughout the school, running a market stall and ‘Business in a Box’. Challenge Days develop creativity in teaching and learning. Support personal learning and thinking skills through range of activities offered.

7 Behaviour and Safety Strengths Attitudes to learning are very good and with high expectations. Well Being Lead has initiated range of projects in which Sixth Formers demonstrate their responsible and mature attitudes. o Buddy System o Makaton mentoring programme o Also school council representatives and Burton Community Learning Trust events. Travel training programme prepares for transition to adult life. Students take responsibility for own safety and well-being through personal safety sessions, sex education, Chelsea’s Choice drama production tackling child sexual exploitation, smoking workshops, E safety sessions and SARAC support. Health and Safety at Work Course Level 1, and Health and Safety sessions provided by Wilmott Dixon prepare students for work place. Interventions to support the students with the most challenging and complex needs include high level support, personalised timetables, a range of positive intervention strategies.

8 Behaviour and Safety Areas of Continued Development Increase awareness of internet safety through workshops and specialist links, and contribute to the revision of the E safety policy. Develop and increase numbers of students involved in travel training.

9 Leadership and Management Strengths Robust monitoring of teaching and learning ensure student progress. Four of the six teachers within the department were chosen to be mentors in the school’s Coaching and Mentoring Programme. Personalised targets ensure students’ needs are met with a vibrant, relevant and flexible curriculum including transition opportunities. Students given many opportunities for responsibility and leadership. Includes volunteering for the D of E Award, school council, dinner monitors and school buddies. Innovative and enthusiastic staff drive student achievement and progress forward. Offer students a wealth of opportunities, such as an Extended Schools Programme and residential visits.

10 Leadership and Management Areas of Continued Development Develop the skills of the new lead TA to co-ordinate work experience in the department, manage the TA team, deliver lessons where appropriate, play an integral role in accreditation. Undertake more classroom observations in collaboration with the SLT to ensure judgments are consistent. Key stage leader is currently undertaking the National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership. Establish further transition links with mainstream schools and SENCo’s to increase student numbers in the sixth form.

11 Overall Effectiveness The Sixth Form is good, with outstanding features. The range of subjects and learning opportunities in the Sixth Form, is broad, relevant and exciting. Alongside Functional Skills and PSD, students are offered an impressive range of work-related qualifications, including animal care and brickwork. Their independence and life skills, are developed in preparation for the next steps of their education, and their next stages of life.
