2 Hydrosphere Introduction To be able to: - Describe the Hydrological Cycle with the aid of a diagram. - Understand the movement of water in river basins. - Explain the various stages of a river profile. - Explain the formation of various river features (waterfall, ox-bow lake etc.). - Interpret and label hydrographs. - Describe the physical characteristics of a river and its valley on an OS map.

8 Hydrosphere Introduction The word ‘hydro’ means water. Hydrology, the scientific study of water at the earth’s surface and its links with the atmosphere.

9 Hydrosphere Introduction Although a person can live without food for more than a month, a person can only live without water for approximately one week! It takes 2 gallons to brush your teeth, 2 to 7 gallons to flush a toilet, and 25 to 50 gallons to take a shower! 70% of the worlds population do not have pure water. Everyday 25,000 people die from waterborne diseases! “The average Kenyan uses around 4 litres of water per day. One person in New York, however, consumes 680 litres per day!” (170 Times More!)

12 Hydrosphere Hydrological Cycle The Hydrological Cycle describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the Earth’s surface. It is a closed system.

13 Before we draw out the hydrological cycle it is important to know the meaning of certain words used in hydrology. In your envelope you will find a selection of words.
