5 Special Edition Woods Snakewood (Brosimum guianense), native to South America, is a rare, exotic wood known for its snakeskin patterns which typically feature reddish and darker browns. Other varieties, equally rare, grow in Australia. Craftsman choose snakewood for violin bows, inlays, specialty objects and veneer. Curly Maple (Acer rubrum ), created by grain distortions in big-leaf Maple trees native to the Northeastern U.S. and Canada, features rich colors ranging from a soft creamy white to a reddish brown. Used in fine furniture and musical instruments such as the famed Gibson Les Paul “Standard” guitar sold in the late 1950s and prized today by vintage collectors everywhere. Amboyna Burl (Pterocarpus indicus) comes from the Narra or Padauk trees native to Southeast Asia and, though the trees are abundant, the Amboyna burl is among the rarest in the world. This burl typically features a deep red color and, more rarely, golden hues. Uses of this wood include luxury vehicles, such as Rolls Royce, high-end furniture and specialty objects.
