2 Analogies (page 25R) Note: Analogies often look like this-
An analogy is a type of word problem that has two word pairs. To solve the analogy you must find a word that correctly completes the second pair. At first glance, the words in an analogy may seem to have nothing to do with each other, but the words are always logically related. The first pair of words has a relationship similar to the second pair of words. To solve the analogy, you need to figure out that relationship!! For example, Up is to Down as Over is to Under. Up is the opposite to down, just as over is the opposite to under. Note: Analogies often look like this- Up:Down ::Over:Under (Up is to down as over is to under) : = is to :: = as

3 To answer an analogy question you must:
1.) Recognize the relationship between the words in the given word pair 2.) Select the answer containing words related to one another in most nearly the same way 3.) Recognize when two word pairs display equal relationships Note: With analogies, the relationship will always have to do with the meaning of the words.

4 Examples of possible relationships in an analogy:
Synonyms or antonyms A part to the whole A member to the category that contains it Cause to effect (or effect to cause) Varying degrees of a quantity or quality Object to function Let’s take a look at each one…

5 Here is one example of Synonym relationships:
Infant:Baby::Grown-Up: _________? Infant:Baby::Grown-Up:Adult

6 Here is one example of Antonym relationships:
Big:Small::Full:_______? Big:Small::Full:Empty

7 Here is one example of Part to Whole relationships:
Wheel:Car::Branch:_______? Wheel:Car::Branch:Tree

8 Here is one example of Member to Category relationships:
Apple:Fruit::Carrot:_______? Apple:Fruit::Carrot:Vegetable

9 Here is one example of Cause Effect relationships:
Fracture:Pain::Heat:________ Fracture:Pain::Heat:Boil

10 Here is one example Matters of Degree relationships:
Warm:Hot::Cool:______? Warm:Hot::Cool:Freezing

11 Here is one example of Object to Function relationships:
Truck:Transport::Oven:______? Truck:Transport::Oven:bake

12 One last tip!! APPLE : FRUIT ::
Try to determine the precise relationship between the words in the given pair Form a sentence that captures the relationship between the two words Then look for the answer choice containing the word pair whose relationship is closest to that of the given pair and can be expressed in a similar fashion. For example: APPLE : FRUIT :: Salad : Mix Orange: Banana Juice : Can Slice : Core Butterfly: Insect Make a sentence that shows the relationship between apple and fruit. How about “An apple is a type of fruit.” Test that sentence by going through all five answers choices, replacing apple & fruit with the different pairs of words. Only one pair fits the sentence. Answer E: A butterfly is a type of insect.

23 26R - Commas No price too high! No, price too high! Let’s talk turkey.
Woman without her man is nothing. Woman! Without her, man is nothing.

24 Commas should be used to . . .
separate items in a series of three or more. Separate the dependent and independent clauses when the dependent clause comes first. Separate coordinate adjectives.

25 Commas separate items in a series of three or more.
Each item in a series can consist of one word or more than one word. Tom, Bob, and Harry all came to the party. I can’t decide if I want to sleep in, go jogging, or get started on my next essay.

26 Separate the dependent and independent clauses when the dependent clause comes first.
If you want to go shopping, we can go tomorrow. When I first saw her, I thought she was sad. NOT when the independent clause comes first. We can go tomorrow if you want to go shopping. I thought she was sad when I first saw her. **BISAWAWE 1st = comma **BISAWAWE in the middle = no comma

27 Separate coordinate adjectives.
She is a wonderful, pretty lady. That movie is a thrilling, scary adventure.

28 Comma Practice (26L) Write 3 example sentences for each of the 3 rules. You may work with your group. You have 10 minutes.

29 (27L) Act 1, Scene 1 Study Questions Answer the following questions in complete sentence.
Why did Walter ask Ruth what was wrong with her? Why was Ruth upset when Walter gave Travis the money? Who are Willy and Bobo? Walter said, “Damn my eggs…damn all the eggs that ever was!” Why? Who is Beneatha? Why was Mama getting a check for $10,000? Why did Beneatha say she wouldn’t marry George? What was Beneatha’s attitude towards God?
