1.2 Order of Operations Numerical expressions often contain more than one operation. Order of Operations: – Step 1 – Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols. – Step 2 – Evaluate all powers. – Step 3 – Do all multiplications and/or divisions from left to right. – Step 4 – Do all additions and/or subtractions from left to right. PEMDAS

Evaluate Expressions

Grouping Symbols Grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], and braces { } are used to clarify or change the order of operations. They indicate that the expression within the grouping symbol is to be evaluated first.

Grouping Symbols Evaluate each expression.

Grouping Symbols Evaluate each expression.

Fraction Bar Evaluate the expression.

Evaluate an Algebraic Expression Evaluate the expression if a = 7, b = 3, and c = 5. 0

Use Algebraic Expressions The Pyramid Arena in Memphis, Tennessee, is the third largest pyramid in the world. The area of its base is 360,000 square feet, and it is 321 feet high. The volume of any pyramid is one third of the product of the area of the base B and its height h.
