1 Lymph System Types of Immunity

3 1- Innate immunity: ~basic resistance to disease that a species
Types of Immunity 1- Innate immunity: ~basic resistance to disease that a species is born with 3

4 4 types of innate immunity
1. 1st line of defense Skin, mucous, oil, sweat, tears and saliva 2. Inflammation response Damaged cells and WBC release histamine dilating blood vessels allowing fluid to enter area 3. Genetic Immunity Pathogens can affect certain host species but not others 4. Cell mediated destruction of foreign particles by T-cells and Macrophages 4

5 Steps to: CELL MEDIATED IMMUNITY
1- foreign invader is engulfed by MACROPHAGE 2- macrophage presents antigen on surface to HELPER T-CELL 3- HELPER T-CELL is activated and calls in KILLER T-CELLS, SUPPRESSOR T-CELLS, MEMORY T-CELLS 4- KILLER T-cells go into circulation and hunt down bad guys—destroy by LYSIS of cell membrane 5- SUPPRESSOR T-CELLS stop response once antigen is destroyed

7 ~gradually building up resistance using
2- Acquired immunity: ~gradually building up resistance using antibodies ~defends against SPECIFIC individual pathogens

8 2 types of Acquired immunity
1. Passive – antibodies from another source mom to unborn baby placenta and through milk 2. Active-individual produces own antibodies a. Vaccines: injections of weakened, dead or incomplete pathogens b. Antibody Mediated: exposed to antigen, your body will produce antibodies Passive- artificial – ex. Snake bites, rabies, antiserum 8

9 ANTIBODY MEDIATED 1- Antigen is engulfed by a MACROPHAGE
2- macrophage/antigen stimulates HELPER T-CELL 3- HELPER T-cell will make SUPPRESSOR T activates B-cells in lymph tissue 4- Activated B-cell makes memory B-cells and plasma cells 5- Plasma cell secretes ANTIBODIES 6- Antibodies bind to pathogen and mark for macrophages to engulf OR antibodies destroy pathogen themselves 7- Once pathogen is destroyed, Suppressor T-cells stop immune response 9
