APOSTLE RONALD C. HILL, SR. GENESIS 6:5-22 May 18, 2011 May 21, 2011 STUDIES IN GENESIS

GENESIS 6:5 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

A. In Noah’s day the character of human sin was blatantly manifested in two primary ways: Sexual Lust and Violence.

GENESIS 6:2 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

GENESIS 6:11 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

1.Human depravity has not changed; it is still through lust and violence that evil finds unrestrained expression. 2. Today immorality, ungodliness, pornography, and violence dominate our societies.

GENESIS 6:6 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

B. The word “repented” does not mean that God made a mistake in His dealings with men, but rather indicates a change in divine direction because of the sins of men. God was expressing sorrow for what the people had done to themselves, as a parent might express sorrow over a rebellious child.

GENESIS 6:7 7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

C. The wickedness of man had become so great, if God had not done this, man would ultimately have destroyed himself, although it would have taken much longer, sin had to be judged. The sad fact is man can walk in such darkness until he will not and cannot hear the voice of God. The only choice God has at that point is to destroy man.

GENESIS 6:8 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD

D. This is the first time that “GRACE” is mentioned in the Bible. Grace refers to the goodness of God extended to undeserving man.

GENESIS 6:9 9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

F. Noah and Enoch are the only men in scripture who are said to have walked with God. Amidst the widespread wickedness and evil of those days. God found Noah, a man who still sought communion with Him and who was a righteous man.

1. When the Bible says Noah was “perfect in his generations” it indicates that he kept himself separate from the moral evil of the society around him.

2. Noah set his face against popular public opinion and conduct and found favor with God.

* Some have limited the word LAW to the Old Testament, and the word GRACE to the New Testament. But this is a serious error. Here in Genesis 6, early in Old Testament history, and long before the Mosaic Law, Noah experiences the marvelous grace of God.

a.The Old Testament is the account of how God in grace dealt with the nation of Israel and sinners. b.The New Testament is the account of how God in grace deals with the church and sinners.

GENESIS 6:10 10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

G. Noah’s three sons became the ancestors of the three great races of mankind: the Black, the White, and the Yellow. Their geographic settlements were Africa, Europe, and Asia.

GENESIS 6:11 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

GENESIS 6:12 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt ; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

H. The wickedness of that generation is here again spoken of. All kinds of sin were found among them. Meanwhile the crime rate was rising rapidly across the earth, and God saw it as being “rotten to the core”.

GENESIS 6:13 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

I. God had already determined in His heart He would destroy the earth and the people. God also explains to Noah why He is going to destroy everything.

AMOS 3:7 7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

ST.JOHN 6:13 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak : and he will shew you things to come.

J. One of the benefits and blessing of the spirit-filled life is receiving information from God about future events before they happen.

GENESIS 6:14 14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch

K. Noah was instructed to cover the inside and outside of the Ark with pitch. The Hebrew word here translated “pitch” is “Kapher”. In almost every other instance in the Old Testament Kapher is translated by the world “atonement”.

EXODUS 30:10 10 And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the LORD.

1. To atone is to cover with blood.

2. Pitch was also used in the basket in which the baby Moses was placed.

3. As the oily pitch protected the ark from the floods judgment, so will the blood of Christ protect the believer from the sin’s judgment.

GENESIS 6:15 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

GENESIS 6:16 16 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

L. The measurements are given in cubits. (1 Cubit=18 inches) Thus the Ark was 450 Feet Long, 75 Feet wide, and 45 Feet high. It had three decks. The window in verse 16 was literally “a place of light”, probably an opening for light and air which extended the full length of the Ark.

GENESIS 6:17 17 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

M. Again God reiterated His promise to destroy all flesh and every thing that is in the earth shall die. God makes it clear that He is the one who would bring the flood upon the earth.

GENESIS 6:18 18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

N. This is the first time the world “covenant” is used in the Bible.

1.In the Hebrew text the world covenant “Berith” means determination, stipulation covenant.

2. The K.J.V. also translates it as “league” and “confederacy”. It was an ancient custom of ratifying solemn covenants by passing between the divided parts of victims. It is a treaty, or an alliance of friendship, a pledge, and obligation between a monarch and his subjects.

3. It is a contract which was accompanied by signs, sacrifice and a solemn oath which sealed the relationships with promises of blessing for obedience and curses for disobedience.

GENESIS 6:18 18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

GENESIS 6:19 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

GENESIS 6:20 20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

GENESIS 6:21 21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

GENESIS 6:22 22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

O. God in affect tells Noah that they had a contract. God says everything else is going to die (with the exceptions of the fish), but you will remain alive if you keep your word and do as you are told.

1. In verse 22 the Bible says Noah did according to all that God commanded him.
