2 Formatting 8 ½ x 11 white paper 12 point Times New Roman 1 inch margins Double space 1 space after punctuation Papers should be bound Include name, class, assignment, and title

3 Structure Introduction –Why important to reader –Thesis statement Body –Well-organized support for thesis statement –Cite all supporting materials used Conclusion –Summarize paper –Refers to thesis statement

4 Sentences and Paragraphs Sentences –Contain subject and verb –Avoid wordiness –Keep number and tense consistent Paragraphs –3-5 sentences –Focus on one topic –Avoid redundancy

5 Thesis Statement Tells what paper is about State clearly and early Should match your conclusion Summarizes your topic in one sentence

6 Tips Use quotation marks with accurate quotes Completely change words and sentence structure when paraphrasing Write out abbreviations first time Use gender inclusive, non-sexist language Be careful with commonly confused words Use respectful language Carefully evaluate internet sources

7 Style Manuals Check with instructor about which to use Use the most recent edition Things to consider –Formatting for numbers and block quotes –Use of contractions, slang, second person –Formatting for headings, references, and citations
