PoDAG XXIV: Workshop on EOS Snow & Ice Products (Preliminary Plans) Marilyn Kaminski MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 2 Basic Guidance for Workshop Planning “NSIDC should continue to support this workshop, in conjunction with NASA or other co-sponsor ·Biannual seems most reasonable frequency ·East Coast location gets good support from NASA; more central location may enable participation from greater number of academics” Conclusion from previous workshop: Action Item from PoDAG XXIII: “#4 Hands on workshops: The UWG liked the results of the snow and ice workshop. We recommend that NSIDC develop future workshops, maybe with differing themes, and partnered with other DAACs”

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 3 Early Thoughts on Sponsorship (pros and cons) NSIDC-only sponsorship  Focus on NSIDC (brand awareness)  Will need significant support from NSIDC scientists for developing agenda, identifying speakers/panelists, promoting workshop NSIDC and co-sponsorship  Possibly increases number of participants  Reduces NSIDC’s resource commitment for organizing  Dilutes NSIDC focus

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 4 Early Thoughts on Content Structure  Similar to previous workshop: talks, panel discussions, demonstrations, poster sessions  Emphasize attendee participation and interaction Content  Focus on cryospheric data and research  Address all EOS instruments at NSIDC  Bring in other DAACs/other instrument data as appropriate to support that focus Ideas for themes  Data fusion  Long time-series data records  Data and models  ?

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 5 Early Thoughts on Logistics Location: Boulder  More central location should increase participation by West Coast residents  Hotel or university space  Hosting locally simplifies organization significantly Time: Fall 2006  Football schedule may impact hotel/facility availability  Sept/Oct date avoids conflicts with holidays and AGU, and increases likelihood of good weather Duration: 2 days  Mid-week timing minimizes problems with football schedule Cost  Charging a fee for attendees would enable us to provide coffee/snacks/lunch with minimal mid-day disruption  Without a fee we would need to seek a contribution from NASA or similar source for coffee/snacks Attendance  Approx 100 people is maximum for getting good interaction  A cap on attendance would prevent facility overflow

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 6 Now What? Activity to date  Resources allocated in workplan for organizing  Kaminski/Brekke general discussions on logistics planning  Kaminski/Armstrong general discussions on sponsorship and content Need input from PoDAG  Agreement to proceed  Suggestions on themes  Suggestions on co-sponsors

PoDAG XXIV Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead November 4, 2005 7 And Then What? Next steps (after EOY 2005)  Decide on theme  Decide on additional sponsor and/or co-convener Next next steps (early spring 2006)  Choose dates and location  Develop agenda and invite speakers/panelists  Begin promotion
