1 Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Naturalist, Visual/Spatial, Verbal Lesson Abstract: Students will see, listen to, smell, and if possible, touch the Teacher’s Pet. Students will estimate and measure the pet using the appropriate tools. The students will create a diagram of the pet and include labels. Materials Needed: Ruler, tape measure, magnifying glasses, scale, paper, pencils, drawing boards (if drawing outside), whiteboard or chart stand Procedures: Students like to learn about their teacher. Meeting their Teacher’s Pet is an effective way to get to know their teacher and practice scientific investigation. Students should be prepared ahead of time for the upcoming Teacher’s Pet Day. Discuss what a scientist is (they study things, perform experiments, discover new things, and invent things). Discuss the fact that scientists have a scientific method and the first step is to observe and record. Have the students watch BrainPop Jr.-”Observing:. Instruct students to behave like scientists as they observe and record their teacher’s pet when it visits their classroom. On Teacher’s Pet Day introduce the pet and tell a bit about it. Students need time to ask questions. Ask students to touch the pet and write down their texture words (texture is the way something feels). Standards Addressed in this Lesson: S1CS2. Students will have the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and following scientific explanations. d. Make quantitative estimates of familiar lengths, weights, and time intervals, and check them by measuring. S1CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities. a. Use ordinary hand tools and instruments to construct, measure, and look at objects. Standards Addressed in this Lesson: S1CS2. 2 Procedure continued: Have students name some parts of the pet. Write them in a visible place so that students can see them as they label their diagram. Have students estimate some of the dimensions of the pet (such as height, width, depth, weight). Write some of these estimates in the display area. Choose a student volunteer to measure the pet. Display the results. Students will compare and discuss their estimates with the actual measurement. Have students draw a diagram of the pet and label as many parts as possible. Assessment: Students should estimate the measurements of the teacher’s pet. Students will record the actual measured dimensions of the pet. Students should draw a diagram of the pet and label it with texture words and parts.
