6 Electrical DeviceWhat it Does

7 Static electricity is caused by electrons, the tiny particles that "orbit" around the nucleus of an atom. Since everything we know of is made of atoms, everything we know of has a bit of static electricity. Each electron surrounding the atom has a small negative charge. An atom normally has an equal number of electrons and protons (positively charged particles in its nucleus) so atoms have no overall electrical charge. Static electricity moves when there is an unequal electrical charge between atoms.

8 Here is an example: Have you ever walked across a carpet then touched something metal, like a door knob or a faucet? You sometimes feel a shock of electricity. When you walk across the carpet, your feet are rubbing against it. As your feet rub against the fibers of the carpet, some of the electrons in the carpet are collected on your body. As more and more electrons collect on your body, you become negatively charged with electricity. When you touch the door knob or faucet, the negative charge on you is attracted to the positive charges in the door knob or faucet, causing the current to jump between your body and the metal door knob or faucet. The charge runs instantly to Earth--through you--and that's the shock you feel.

9 Students in Group #1: summarize the definition. Students in Group #2: ask questions on unclear material. Students in Group #1: clarify the unclear material. Students in Group #2: Draw an illustration of the concept.
