1
SI Units International System of Units Helps to maintain consistency in reporting measurements Mass Volume Length
2
Mass Mass is measured in grams (g) – The standard unit of mass in the metric system is the gram. – Other units of mass and their equivalents in grams are as follows: 1000 milligrams (mg) = 1 g 100 centigrams (cg) = 1 g 10 decigrams (dg) = 1 g 1 hectogram (hg) = 100 g 1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 g
3
Mass is measured using a scale
4
Volume Volume is measured in liters (L) The standard unit of volume in the metric system is the liter – Other units of volume and their equivalents in liters are as follows: 1000 milliliters (mL) = 1 L 100 centiliters (cL) = 1 L 10 deciliters (dL) = 1 L 1 hectoliter (hL) = 100 L 1 kiloliter (kL) = 1000 L
5
Volume can also be measured in cubic centimeters 1 cm³ = 1 mL
6
Volume can be measured using graduated cylinders, beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks or pipettes
7
Length Length is measured in meters (m) The standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter – Other units of length and their equivalents in meters are as follows: 1000 millimeters (mm) = 1 m 100 centimeters (cm) = 1 m 10 decimeters (dm) = 1 m 1 hectometer (hm) = 100 m 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 m
8
Length can be measured with a meter stick or ruler
