6 Older people – trends for Bangladesh Life expectancy has increased about 70yrs Population 60+ predicted to rise from 7.5% today to nearly 23% in 2050 Just under 50% of older men and 17% of older women are economically active in last few months (decreases steeply) with age For 61%, children are the main source of support.

13 Impacts of social pensions The evidence Poverty: Universal pension in Tanzania would reach 1 in 4 households and lift 1.5 million older people out of poverty (HelpAge feasibility study) Nutrition: Girls in households with grandmothers receiving pension better 3-4 cm taller than others Livelihoods: Increase in food consumption in rural areas 1.5 x value of pension Inequality: Pensions up to the minimum wage contributed to 1/3 of reduction in inequality in Brazil, 1994-2005 (Soares et al, 2006) Macro-economics:
