To reduce crime due to intoxication Religious morals(the devils drink) Liquor led to more prostitution To save grain/money for the war

Americans would drink at speak-easies which were bars that sold alcohol illegally. People made home made liquor. Imported from other countries Bribed police and government officials

Many people were for the Volstead act like… -Women/families: for a long/safe marriage -Factories: no drinking while working -most fundamentalists -Senate: said will reduce crime

There were also many people against the 18 th amendment like… -businesses who made it: lost their jobs -small-town residents/farmers -immigrants: big drinkers in their countries -most middle class -Woodrow Wilson

Disrespect towards the law Rise in organized crime(Al Capone) Corrupted parts the government Increased drug habits(speakeasy clubs)

In the end the Volstead act failed when the 21 st amendment replaced it in January 17, 1933 because… Too much money was used to enforce it Was creating more crime Was corrupting parts of the government
