3 Short- Term Effects of Alcohol (occurs within minutes of drinking alcohol) Mouth : Alcohol is absorbed into mucus lining, tongue, gums, and throat. Blood : 20% of alcohols absorbed through stomach into the bloodstream. Too much alcohol may cause vomiting. Small Intestine : The remaining alcohol moves to the small intestine where it enters the bloodstream more slowly. Heart : Alcohol causes the heart to beat faster; blood vessels widen, which causes the body temperature to drop. Brain : Alcohol reaches the brain within minutes. Alcohol lessens the brains ability to move, speak, and effects vision. Brains cells are destroyed. Liver : The liver is responsible for filtering alcohol out of the blood stream. If a person drinks alcohol faster than the liver filters it, they will become intoxicated. Kidneys : The kidneys work harder to convert alcohol to urine in order for the body to remove the alcohol. *Alcohol is removed from the body through carbon dioxide (breath vapor), urine, and sweat.

4 Long-Term Effects of Alcohol Brain : Destroys millions of brain cells. Unlike other body cells, the brain cells cannot be replaced. Liver : May develop Cirrhosis, which is scarring and destruction of liver tissue. Cirrhosis can cause death. Heart : Heavy drinking contributes to high blood pressure & may damage the heart muscle. Can even cause heart failure by putting strain on an already damaged heart. Stomach : Alcohol increases the flow of gastric juices from stomach lining. Large amounts of alcohol can cause more flows of these juices damaging the lining, repeated irritation can cause ulcers.
