Current Situation Two groups of rebels mounted a rebellion against the Sudanese government. This fight has lead to a campaign of violence. The Government supplied a militias called the Janjaweed to fight against the uprisings. They supplied them with weapons, ammunition and armor. The people are under the military dictatorship with a pro-government parliament. The United States of America has declared the conflict in Darfur to be genocide. March 2005 – The United Nations Security Council began to take steps: - Authorized Sanctions to be imposed on individuals responsible for violating international law. - They referred the situation in Darfur to the new ICC. (International Criminal Court)
Issues- Refugees Hot Conditions Little Shelter Limited Supplies of Food Lack of Safety Lack of Medicine Lack of Water Emotional Crisis
Media Coverage -The media in Darfur is obviously censored and controlled by the government. -Some of the rather “sensitive” information and media footages cannot be broadcasted on international news channels because of the government is afraid of being prosecuted by the UN. -Most News Channels such as: CNN and BBC are not classifying it under the name genocide. It is called “The Humanitarian Conflict in Darfur”.
International Responses The United States of America was the country to declare the situation in Darfur to be genocide. Australia and other countries send aid to the people in Sudan. The United Nations authorized sanctions to be imposed on individuals responsible for violating international law. Human Right groups also send aid and raised awareness.
The Future The united nations will create a resolution to settle the situation in the Darfur. I think the optimal solution would be for the country to split and have it’s own separate governments.
