Objectives: The Secondary Social Studies Department will implement STEPS in Time, which is a program designed to 1) improve teachers knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history; 2) improve teachers content delivery of American history in the classroom;

Objectives contd: 3) increase students interest, performance, and achievement in American history; and 4) build long-term capacity to support and sustain improved teaching and learning in American history.

What Teachers May Apply? Middle School United States History High School American History

Why Should Teachers Participate? Amazing opportunity to learn from and interact with renowned American history professors, noted historians, and members of historical organizations Professional and personal growth Membership in various historical societies Eligible to represent the district at various conferences and staff development opportunities Development and implementation of innovative technology

Why Should Teachers Participate? Local field experiences Summer Institute possible destinations: New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia Classroom materials and lessons Time for collegial sharing, curriculum development and assessments Up to 120 in-service points may be earned Funding for substitutes and stipends

What Type of Commitment is Involved? ALL applicants must attend an initial mandatory meeting. Tentative number of staff development days 7 during school sessions (grant will pay for substitutes) 3 after school (stipends will be paid) 3 Saturdays (stipends will be paid) Five day summer institute possible destinations: New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia (optional)
