Week-long attendance and a completed high quality project are required to receive a $100 stipend and recertification points. (you will need to check with your school system regarding the amount of points). Teachers’ projects will be due June 28, 2004 at 4 PM. All stipends and recertification points will be awarded after July 1, 2004. Each day will begin at 8:30 with an interactive and stimulating lecture by Dr. Mike Trochim, professor of History at Ferrum College. He will cover many historical topics through storytelling, maps, primary source documents, and discussion. After lunch, the participants will break into smaller groups for various presentations. On Friday, the entire group will go on a field trip to Booker T. Washington National Monument. What do I need to bring? You will receive a packet of required pre- institute reading. You may want to bring questions or comments that you have related to this reading. Also it is important to bring ideas for the required project, maximizing the time you will have to work. Other than that, everything else will be provided. For your convenience, we encourage you to bring a personal laptop to help with the project. What do I need to do if I want to participate? Fill out the application contained in this brochure as soon as possible, because seating is limited. Incentives for participation include recertification points (as allowed by your school system) and many door prizes, including hands-on history materials. Please attach a typed 150-250 word response to the following question: What are you hoping to professionally gain from the summer institute? Franklin County Public Schools and the Virginia’s CHILD (Children’s Historical Investigations Leading to Discovery) Project, in partnership with Blue Ridge Public Television, Ferrum College, the Blue Ridge Institute, Virginia Historical Society, and T/TAC, are extremely excited to announce our 2004 American History Summer Institute. The institute will be in session from June 14-18, 2004 at the Gereau Center for Applied Technology and Career Exploration in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Hours for attendance will be 8:30-3:30. What is the purpose of the American History Summer Institute? Teachers will: deepen and broaden content knowledge of American History. be involved in discussion groups to share what has been learned. observe and participate in various sessions. share best instructional practices in relation to the teaching of history. apply what has been learned by creating a final product: i.e., lesson plans, hands-on activities, PowerPoint Presentations, PowerPoint Games, other technology pieces. Final project must include a written lesson plan with a presentation on video, CD, DVD, or present in person. How much does it cost? Nothing! The entire cost of the Institute is paid through the grant’s funding, except for lunch.

4 In October 2002, Franklin County Public Schools was awarded $457,000 by the United States Department of Education for the Virginia’s CHILD (Children’s Historical Investigations Leading to Discovery) Project. Virginia’s CHILD’s mission is to help teachers become highly qualified teachers of American History by focusing on the content. As teachers become more proficient in their content knowledge, they will be more affective. The grant team, Lisa Angell, Bernice Cobbs, and Jenny Flora, works closely with the fourth and fifth grade history teachers in planning, creating materials, researching, and team teaching. Historical hands-on kits have been created to highlight the content of the Virginia and United States I SOLs. These kits contain relevant costumes, artifacts, documents, and a notebook of study guides, vocabulary, graphic organizers, and historical readings for teachers and students.
