3 Facts The longest river is the Duanube which is also the longest in Europe. The biggest lake is the Balaton. The highest mountain is the Kékes at 1,041m. The capital of Hungary is Budapest. The population is 9,877,000 people. The area is 93,000 km2. The currency is the forint. 300 forints is equivalent to 1 euro. Hungary joined the EU in 2004.

5 Interesting Facts Hungary attracts 10.2million tourists annually. There are about 500 thermal springs in Hungary. A Hungarian race horse called Kincsem (my treasure) won all 52 races in her life! She was 13 years old when she died

6 History Over the course of history, Hungary was ruled by many countries. It was part of the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Austria and the Soviet Union. 4 million Hungarians died in WWI 500,000 Hungarian Jews were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. It was a Communist state for 42 years.

8 Climate Hungary has a continental climate with hot summers and get very cold winters. An average hot day in summer is 23- 28 degrees Celsius. An average cold day in winter is -3 to -7 degrees Celsius. Hungary can get extreme temperatures like 42 degrees in 2007 or -35 in 1940.

10 Sport Hungary’s strongest sport is water polo. The Hungarian international won 6 world cups an 9 Olympics. Hungarian soccer player Puskás Ferenc scored the most goals in the 20 th century and remained unbeaten for 32 games- more than anyone in history. Hungary won 472 Olympic medals. That’s one for every 21,000 th people. More than any other nation.

12 Inventors/Inventions Rubik Ern ő invented the Rubik’s Cube in 1974. Vitamin C was discovered by Hungarian Szent-Gyorgyi Albert who won the Nobel Prize for that. Other Hungarian inventions include the electric motor and the match.

14 Points of interests Lake Balaton is a popular holiday destination for tourists and Hungarians who can’t afford or don’t want to go to a foreign place. Hungary has a lot of thermal baths like the Szécshenyi thermal bath which is the biggest in Europe powered by two thermal springs. Budapest is the biggest city of Hungary and the Danube flows through it. There are several bridges across the river but the most impressive is the Chain Bridge. The parliament building of the country is very impressive too. The builders used 40million bricks, 500,000 precious stones and 40 kg of gold.
