3 Why knowledge is so important? Knowledge is the first factor of competitiveness between firms. -Globalisation. Firms compete internationally -Firms need to distinct themselves from their competitors by innovation, inventing new products, processes and services and doing so efficiently. -Consumers make higher demands on the products they buy - ICT development make that knowledge spread faster and faster

4 Designing a policy mix Challenges for SMES -Acquiring knowledge about many different aspects -Professionalisation of entrepreneurship -Attention to the combination and permanent upgrading of technologies, even total disruption -Satisfying different performance demands at the same time -With a hight speed -New forms of transference

5 Designing a policy mix SME acquires knowledge mainly from suppliers, colleagues, competitors and clients, only a minor degree utilize the knowledge infrastructure for acquiring knowledge. Universities and Technology centers must streamline their performance regarding business sector’s needs For improving knowledge absorption an complete ecosystem around the SME is needed, where knowledge generators, technology transfers institutions, services and technology providers, consumers….and public administrations cooperate fluently.

11 Designing a policy mix Conclusions Knowledge is the first factor of competitiveness between firms. For improving knowledge absorption, an complete ecosystem around the SME is needed, where knowledge generators, technologies transfers institutions, services and technology providers, consumers….and public administrations works together Knowledge absortion is a process where different instruments, steadily delivered at the demand of the company, should be implemented. Innovation is a private decision based on cost-benefit analys. Decision can be facilitated by the environmental conditions created, such as removing barriers (red tape) and pushing incentives managed by the public administration (funding), universities (skill, research, translation..)
