4 What is Self-Concept?  The view that you have of yourself and the way that other people see you, including:  The way you feel about different issues  What is important to you  What you like and don’t like  Who you like to be with  What you do well  What you need to improve on

5 Influential People…  Parents/guardians  Grandparents  Brothers/sisters  Friends  Teachers  Media

6 Developing a Positive Self-Concept  Concentrate on what you do well  Don’t be too hard on yourself  Ask people you trust for help, when needed  Try new things  Don’t read too much into each look or word

7 Bell Ringer:  Complete the “This Is Me” worksheet in your Self- Concept note packets

8 Effects of a Good Self-Concept  High self-esteem  Increased confidence in self  Feeling valued, loved, and secure  Take care of yourself and health  Care about/get along with others  Bounce back after disappointment (resiliency)
