CLIL Chemistry-English a.s. 2006/07 3c socio

PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES antiexpro biextraproto chlorohydrosclero circumintersemi comaxysub contramegasuper cytometasyn dimicrotele ectposttrans endopreultra Task: PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES DERIVED FROM LATIN AND GREEK are peculiar to scientific language. They have exactly the same meaning in English as in most other languages, Italian included. So it should not be difficult for you to do the following exercises. Match the words in the box with the prefixes. across, after, against (2), around, before, between, cell, extremely (2), more than far, in favour of, former, green, half, partly hard, inside, original, outside (2), over a long distance, together (2) through, two (2) under, very large (2), very small, water

–ing forms instead of relative clauses Task: Try and explain the meaning of the underlined word from the text using a relative clause.  The inner orbitals surrounding the atom are spherical. - The inner… ………………………………………………………………………….. Now use –ing forms to replace the following relative clauses.  Electrons exist in a cloud that surrounds the atom. …………………………………………………………………………………………………….  The “strong force” is the force between the protons and neutrons which overcomes the repulsive electrical force. ………………………………………………………………………………………………….  The electron is the lightweight particle that "orbits" outside of the atomic nucleus. ………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Summing up task Reading text 5 shows most of the features of scientific language we met so far. Look in the text for examples of : ouse of –ing forms instead of relative clauses, e.g.: ……. ouse of impersonal subjects, e.g.: ……. ouse of passive forms, e.g.: ……. ouse of words or prefixes/suffixes derived from Latin or Greek, e.g.: ……. ouse of pre-determination (word order from right to left), e.g.: …….

Internet tasks UNIT A.2. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND STATES OF MATTER  surf the net and do the activity on “physical changes” that you find on this web page: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/chemistry ; or the activity on “solids, liquids and gases” that you find on this web page: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/revisewise/science www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/chemistrywww.bbc.co.uk/schools/revisewise/sciencewww.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/chemistrywww.bbc.co.uk/schools/revisewise/science UNIT B.3. FORERUNNERS  Search for information about the theories illustrated by the pictures below and take notes to describe them. Web sites: http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/forerunnershtml ; http://www.chemistry210.com//notes.htm http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/forerunnershtml http://www.chemistry210.com//notes.htm http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/forerunnershtml http://www.chemistry210.com//notes.htm UNIT C.2. HOW TO READ THE P.T.E.  search the following web site and play some of the Element Games you find there: http://education.jlab.org/indexpages/elementgames.html. http://education.jlab.org/indexpages/elementgames.html  revise the names and symbols of the elements with Element Flash Cards or Element Matching Game.  revise the rules for calculating the number of protons, neutrons or electrons in an atom you can practice with the Element Math Game.  If you choose the Element Hangman or the Element Word Scramble you can check your spelling of the elements names  if you prefer crossword puzzle you can play at Element Crossword Puzzles.

SITOGRAFIA FINAL REVISION  test yourself with the chemistry topics you studied so far in the following web site with quizzes on atoms, elements, the states of matter and a general chemistry overview: www.chem4kids.com/activities.html. www.chem4kids.com/activities.html Information, exhibitions   http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk   http://www.thebakken.org http://www.thebakken.org   http://www.chemheritage.org http://www.chemheritage.org   http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu   http://www.chemistry210.com//notes/u01s06a.html http://www.chemistry210.com//notes/u01s06a.html   http://www.chemsoc.org/viselements/pages/history.html http://www.chemsoc.org/viselements/pages/history.html   http://www.webelements.com/ http://www.webelements.com/   pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/default.htm pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/default.htm   chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/blfireworks.htm chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/blfireworks.htm   www.pbs.org/nova/origins/ www.pbs.org/nova/origins/
