1 CSU Spring Semester 2010 Evening Program 2-yr. Junior Class ( 進修部二技三甲 ) Course Title: Basic Reading Comprehension ( 進階英文閱讀 ) Time: Tue, 20:10~21:00, Wed, 21:55~22:45 Place: 11-0612 Instructor: Inga Koehler Required Textbook: Reading Keys, New Edition, Student Book 3, by Miles Craven (Tung Hwa Bookstore)

2 Course Description  This course aims at teaching students reading comprehension at the intermediate to upper- intermediate level by engaging them in activities including text type analysis and improving their key reading and vocabulary skills. At the end of the course the students will be able to handle a wide range of text types confidently.

3 Teaching Methods  The students are required to prepare for the class by doing reading assignments at home. They will discuss their texts in pairs, small groups and with the entire class. Classroom time should primarily be spent on speaking activities.

4 Course Evaluation  Active participation (meaning the students take part in the discussions) 30%, midterm exam 30%, final exam 40%

5 Attendance  If students need to miss classes for a valid reason, they must inform the instructor in advance by email or text message. They are required to make up the missed classes by extra homework. Missing more than one third of the course constitutes mandatory failure.

12 Week 7  Unit 7, Do you like what you see?  Cosmetic surgery ~ Are looks really that important?

13 Week 8  Review  This is your chance to ask questions before the exam.

14 Week 9  Midterm exam  You will be given a short text on a topic that was studied in class. Answer the comprehension questions.  Dictionaries are allowed.

15 Week 10  Unit 8, Food of the future  We ’ ll be looking at ways food is changed by humans and how that might affect us.

16 Week 11  Unit 8, Food of the future  What do you know about the food you eat every day?

17 Week 12  Unit 12, Ethical trading  Text type: e-zine article  Reading quickly  Collocations

18 Week 13  Unit 13, Ethical trading  Does ethical trading make this a better world?

19 Week 14  Unit 14, A small world  Text type: advertisement  Inferring meaning  Suffixes

20 Week 15  Unit 14, A small world  Living in a globalizing world

21 Week 16  Unit 16, Extreme sports  Text type: magazine article  Identifying text organization  Words with different meanings

22 Week 17  Unit 16, Extreme sports  Pushing the limits for a kick

23 Week 18  Final exam  For the final exam, you will be given a short text on a topic you studied in class. You are expected to answer questions and fill in blanks.
