1 Practice Observation General Outline Due Monday November 19, 2012 - observe and document - 2 practice situations for the same team –Practice situations must be of an individual/team sport or event that is preparing for a competitive not a demonstration event in YOUTH SPORT - verification - signed sheet with email address and phone number of coach - report on your observations and critique - critical analysis of the practices -practice description (appendix)

2 Critical Analysis of Practices Were key questions of planning a practice considered? (p. 2 Reference Manual) How was the practice structured? (p. 3) How were activities designed and run? (p. 34) What stage of skill development were the athletes? (p. 38) Were athletic abilities developed? If so how? (p. 45) Were athletes motivated to learn? (p. 79) Planning a practice checklist. (p.84) Were any practice planning tips observed? (p.85)

3 Practice Observation General Outline Introduction (paragraph?) Body of the Paper –Analyze and discuss various aspects of the practice (paragraphing – usually 1 point per paragraph) –Do not just answer questions but put it in a coherent fashion indicating an understanding of the principles and the effectiveness within the practice situations Summary/Conclusions Length 8-10 pages – double spaced, 12 font

4 Practice Observation Grading 10 marks or 40% - Content –Ability to critically analyze practices –Ability to emphasize the major points selectively within the parameters of the paper 5 marks or 20% - Writing Ability –Ability to develop and express your ideas coherently 2.5 marks or 10% Referencing –Quality and quantity (5-10) of references –Use of references –Journals vs web sources –Reference style (APA – see index page) 2.5 marks or 10% - Presentation of paper –Title page, Table of contents, Appendix, layout, typos, spelling 5 marks or 20% - Grammar –Effective use of the written English language

5 Practice Observation Writing Ability 1 Paragraphing – introduction, body, conclusion - one basic theme Run on Sentences - sentence consists of one main idea Sentence Fragments - an incomplete idea Idioms – “its raining cats and dogs.” - “There’s no tomorrow for this team.”

6 Practice Observation Writing Ability 2 Lead Ins –Avoid using words or phrases which lead into your point. i.e. “The next point to consider…”, “This paragraph will explain…” –Just state your point. Lists –Avoid long lists 12 Font Double Spaced Title page, list of references, appendix*

7 Practice Observation Grammar 1 Contractions –Avoid didn’t, can’t, won’t, isn't, aren’t, etc. Conjunctions – do not start sentences with “and, but, or, nevertheless” Spelling – common errors “their, there, they’re” “whether, weather”, “develope”, “athelete” Verb Tense –Keep verb tense consistent Slang – “kids”, “cool”, “hang out”, “neat stuff”

8 Practice Observation Grammar 2 Numbers –Use letters not numbers, except for dates and large numbers i.e. 1,314,295 Capitals/Bold/Italics –Do not use to emphasize points –choose a better word Abbreviations –Do not use abbreviations or short forms Possession –Use apostrophe to show possession –eg. “the girls’ team…” “The coach’s practice plan…”

9 Practice Observation Grammar 3 Brackets –Avoid the use of brackets, use commas instead Split Infinitives –An infinitive verb form is “to play” or “to work” –Do not split eg. “to not play” Third Person –Use third person, do not use “I”, “me” Slashes –Avoid slashes, use conjunction such as “and”, “or”
