Men change but God does not! n (Jude 1:3 NKJV) Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

What is “the faith?” n It was delivered

What is “the faith?” n It was delivered n It can be obeyed! (Acts 6:7; Gal 1:23; 3:23)

What is “the faith?” n (Acts 6:7 NKJV) Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

What is “the faith?” n (Galatians 1:23 NKJV) – “But they were hearing only, “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy.””

What is “the faith?” n (Galatians 3:23 NKJV) - But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.

It must become a part of us! n (2 Corinthians 4:13-14 NKJV) And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, {14} knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you.

It must become a part of us! n This truth can be believed because sufficient evidence is found in the word of God for any man, anywhere and at any time can examine this evidence and believe it too. (Rom 10:17; Acts 2:39)

It must become a part of us! n (Acts 2:39 NKJV) “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

It must become a part of us! n (Romans 10:17 NKJV) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It must become a part of us! n Every lesson in this series contains truths from God’s word that are under attack by Christians who claim it is “traditional” and “like the Pharisees”.

Jesus and the Old Testament n From the Holy Spirit (Mk 12:36)

Jesus and the Old Testament n (Mark 12:36 NKJV) “For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’

Jesus and the Old Testament n From the Holy Spirit (Mk 12:36) n Without Contradiction (Jn 10:34-35)

Jesus and the Old Testament n (John 10:34-35 NKJV) - Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’? {35} “If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

Jesus and the Old Testament n From the Holy Spirit (Mk 12:36) n Without Contradiction (Jn 10:34-35) n We need all that is revealed (Mt 4:4,7,10)

Jesus and the Old Testament n (Matthew 4:4 NKJV) But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus and the Old Testament n (Matthew 4:7 NKJV) Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

Jesus and the Old Testament n (Matthew 4:10 NKJV) Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

Jesus and the Old Testament n From the Holy Spirit (Mk 12:36) n Without Contradiction (Jn 10:34-35) n We need all that is revealed (Mt 4:4,7,10) n We must apply and respect the scriptures! (Mk 12:24-27; Jn 8:47)

Jesus and the Old Testament n (Mark 12:24-27 NKJV) - Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?

Jesus and the Old Testament n Jesus taught that all who will be right with God will have a respect for God’s word. (John 8:47)

Jesus and the Old Testament n (John 8:47 NKJV) “He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

Jesus and The New Testament n A Complete revelation will be given. (Jn 16:12-13; Eph 3:3-5)

Jesus and The New Testament n (John 16:12-13 NKJV) “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. {13} “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Jesus and The New Testament n (John 14:26 NKJV) “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Jesus and The New Testament n (Ephesians 3:3-5 NKJV) - how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, {4} by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), {5} which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets:

Jesus and The New Testament n A Complete revelation will be given. (Jn 16:12-13; Eph 3:3-5) n All must be followed (Mt 28:18-20)

Jesus and The New Testament n (Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV) - And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. {19} “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, {20} “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.)

Jesus and The New Testament n A Complete revelation will be given. (Jn 16:12-13; Eph 3:3-5) n All must be followed (Mt 28:18-20) n If Jesus delivered it we must receive it! (1 Cor 11:23-26)

Jesus and The New Testament n (1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NKJV) - For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; {24} and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

Jesus and The New Testament n {25} In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” {26} For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Jesus and The New Testament n A Complete revelation will be given. (Jn 16:12-13; Eph 3:3-5) n All must be followed (Mt 28:18-20) n If Jesus delivered it we must receive it! (1 Cor 11:23-26) n Some will deceive you. (Mt 7:15)

Jesus and The New Testament n (Matthew 7:15 NKJV) “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Jesus and The New Testament n (1 John 4:1 NKJV) - Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Jesus and The New Testament n (1 John 4:6 NKJV) - We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Bible authority? (Col 3:17)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Colossians 3:17 NKJV) And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n We were really naive. Years later, after we returned to the States, a sister in Christ said, "Oh, brother Woodroof, what faith you had to go all that distance to live and preach the gospel." I replied, "'No Ma'am; it was sheer ignorance. If I ever go back it will be by faith! “

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Of course, we had convictions and good intentions. I remember the first piece of printed material we prepared and placed in mail boxes in that part of the city. It was entitled "The True Church." It had enough Bible references (no scriptures, mind you —just references) to drown the most eager Bible student. I would venture to say not one recipient read that piece. Eventually we learned to letter-box nothing that could not be read between the mail box and the wastebasket.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n "The True Church" pamphlet was just the first of several such efforts indicating that, when it came right down to it, we did not know the message we should be preaching. We knew a lot of true things, but we didn't know the message. We knew a lot of interesting things, but not the ultimate message that melts the heart and brings sinful man back to God. The realization that we had gone 10,000 miles to preach the good news but did not know the message was the most rude awakening I ever had. -THE CHURCH IN TRANSITION, PP. 24-25

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Bible authority? (Col 3:17) n The “externals” of worship. (Jn 4:23-24)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (John 4:23-24 NKJV) “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. {24} “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Does it matter if we observe the Lord’s supper or not? (Acts 20:7)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Acts 20:7 NKJV) Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Is the use of instrumental music in worship a sin? (Rev 22:18-19)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Revelation 22:18-19 NKJV) For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; {19} and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Is the only limitation in our worship “that which the brethren will accept”?

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Bible authority? (Col 3:17) n The “externals” of worship. (Jn 4:23-24) n The work of the church. (Eph 1:22-23)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n What does it mean for Jesus to be “head of the body”? (Eph 1:22-23)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Ephesians 1:22-23 NKJV) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, {23} which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Did Jesus instruct local churches to take up money in the assembly for kitchens, plays and camps? (1 Cor 16:1-2)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (1 Corinthians 16:1-2 NKJV) - Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: {2} On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Bible authority? (Col 3:17) n The “externals” of worship. (Jn 4:23-24) n The work of the church. (Eph 1:22-23) n Fellowship with men who do not obey. (2 Jn 9-11; 2 Cor 11:3-4)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (2 John 1:9-11 NKJV) - Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. {10} If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; {11} for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n Should we be “open and tolerant” by actively supporting and attending churches where men who reject these things worship and teach? (2 Cor 11:3-4)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (2 Corinthians 11:3-4 NKJV) But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. {4} For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted; you may well put up with it!

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n God never has given us His word for us just to talk about. (Luke 6:46)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Luke 6:46 NKJV) - “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n God never has given us His word for us just to talk about. (Luke 6:46) n God does not want us to trust in names but to trust in Him! (Matt 3:8-10)

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n (Matthew 3:8-10 NKJV) “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, {9} “and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. {10} “And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Will We Apply the Scriptures? n God never has given us His word for us just to talk about. (Luke 6:46) n God does not want us to trust in names but to trust in Him! (Matt 3:8-10) n Those who only want to find a church called “church of Christ” with no further investigation have missed what it means to be a Christian!
