It’s easy to be environmentally friendly. In fact, it’s simple!

One Simple Act - Overview Introduction to One Simple Act Five facts and actions you can do for –Energy efficiency –Waste reduction –Water conservation Power of collective action One BIG thing you can do!

One Simple Act – What is it? Movement to inspire and help Albertans to become personally engaged in energy efficiency, waste reduction and water conservation behaviour

Partnerships Advertising & Social Media Alberta Conservation Team

One Simple Act – What is it?

Did you know? Fast Facts on Energy Consumption 5-10% of total home energy use is from appliances and electronic equipment operating in standby mode Transportation > 27% of Canada’s GHG emissions Lighting accounts for 10% of the home energy costs One tire under inflated by 6 psi (40 kPa) can increase fuel consumption by 3% Residential space-heating systems account for up to 60% of a home's energy use

Five things you can do! For Energy Efficiency Unplug seldom-used appliances to reduce standby power use. Carpool, use public transit and be idle free. Slowly replace all your bulbs with CFLs. Check tire pressure to save money on fuel. Access Climate Change Central’s consumer rebate program to reduce your heating costs

Success Story Put timers on lights Use CFL bulbs Switched to programmable thermostats - cut heating costs by more than $2000 a month (1/3 of heating bill) Harry’s Auto Parts Grande Prairie

Did you know? Fast Facts on Waste The average Canadian uses 272 plastic bags each year. In 2006, Albertans collected & recycled 1.5B beverage containers = return rate of 74% 34% of Alberta’s municipal solid waste is paper, 30% is organic

Five things you can do! For Waste Reduction Use reusable bags. Return your beverage containers for refund. Use a reusable beverage container. Buy items in bulk to reduce the packaging wasted. Compost your organics.

Success Story Industry Images Calgary Launched green program in 8 locations across Canada Use online forms Recycled paper stock Provide staff with reusable water bottles

Contests Video

Did you know? Fast Facts on Water Consumption On average, Canadians use 329 litres of water per person per day. We are the second highest consumers of water in the developed world (second only to the United States) Bathing and showering account for almost 40% of household water use A leak of only one drop per second wastes about 10,000 litres of water per year

Five things you can do! For Water Conservation Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. Only run your dishwasher with a full load. Check for leaks, and install water-saving devices on faucets and toilets. Reduce personal shower time by five minutes. Install low-flow or dual-flush toilets.

Success Story City of Grande Prairie Replaced bottled water with reusable pitchers and glasses Save about 800 plastic bottles each year

Simple actions add up! Apr. 21, 2008 – Mar. 31, 2009: 218 events delivered 54 communities visited 19 314 people engaged in-person 12 222 commitments in person and online 944 252 kg of reduced carbon dioxide emissions 257 105 kg of waste diverted from landfill 22 155 759 L of water conserved

One BIG thing you can do! Learn more and act more often! –Invite the Alberta Conservation Team to your community

Alberta Conservation Team Work with groups and organizations to deliver projects that inspire Albertans to reduce waste, improve their energy efficiency and save water. Activities include workshops, demonstrations, site visits, presentations and public events.
