A slit was cut in the body’s left side to remove the organs The brain was pulled out through the nose and thrown away. The organs were soaked in Natron and embalmed separately The intestines, stomach, lungs and liver were protected by the Heads of a falcon, a jackal, a baboon and a human. Anubis was the God of Mummification The sons of Horus protected the organs. REMOVING THE ORGANS

Natron is a white, crystalline, mineral salt. The slit was sewn up and covered with the protective eye of Horus. NATRON AND RESIN The Natron was removed after 40 days. The Egyptians soaked the dead in it to shrink and dry the body so it didn’t decay. Resin is a thick fluid, or a hard, non- crystalline solid used to apply the bandages.

The Bandaging The bandages were about 20 layers of linen. The Egyptians used Resin to glue the linen together. The fingers and toes were sometimes wrapped separately.

Gold, Jewels, and Protective Amulets Before the bandaging the Egyptians adorned their dead with gold, jewels, and protective amulets. They also wrote prayers on the bandages.

If your heart weighed less than the feather than you would go on to the after- life, but if it didn’t it would be eaten by the part hippo, lion and crocodile called the Amemet Monster. The weighing of the heart ceremony was a celebration that told if you could go to the After-life. The Egyptians would put your heart on one side of the scale and weigh it to the feather of truth on the other. Weighing of the Heart Ceremony

The Prayers They had priests at the ceremonies to pray. They had women called mourners to sob and throw dust all over themselves to show their grief and agony.

“Mummy” “Mummy” comes from the Persian word Mumai, meaning tar. The Europeans went over to Egypt and thought the Resin the were using was tar, so they called them mummies.

Types of Mummies The “poor” mummies only got soaked with Natron. The “average” mummies were bandaged. The “rich” mummies were bandaged AND had either a thin sheet of gold or a solid gold mask.

THE AFTERLIFE The Egyptians believed in a life after death. They thought that if a person died and a body decayed, they wouldn’t go to the after-life. Pharaoh's had a more magnificent burial to the after- life.
