Islamic Terrorism in America

America has a long history Islamic terrorism.

On November 4, 1979, radical Muslim students in Tehran, Iran seized the US Embassy. They held 52 hostages for 444 days when they were finally released just minutes after President Ronald Reagan was sworn into office.

Between 1982 and 1991, thirty hostages were taken, (some American, some from allies of the US) in Lebanon. Some were killed, some died while being held, and some were finally released. Terry Anderson was held for 2,454 days. The group responsible was Hezbollah.

Hezbollah is a Shi'ite Islamist political and paramilitary organization based in Lebanon. Hezbollah is also a major provider of social services, which operate schools, hospitals, and agricultural services for thousands of Lebanese Shi'a, and plays a significant force in Lebanese politics. It is regarded as a resistance movement throughout much of the Arab and Muslim world. Many governments, including Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, have condemned actions by Hezbollah while Syria and Iran have stated they support it. The United States, Egypt, Israel, Australia and Canada, regard it in whole or in part as a terrorist organization.

April 18, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon the US Embassy was destroyed by a suicide car bombing. 63 were killed, 17 of whom were Americans. Terrorist group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
