3 Elements of Music Silence Pitch – high or low sounds Dynamics – loud or quiet sounds Tempo – fast or slow music Duration – long and short sounds Timbre – the sound quality Texture – different combinations/layers of sound Structure – the overall plan of the music

4 Key Stage 1 Music The children create short compositions with increasing confidence, imagination and control. Pupils should be taught how to: Create musical patterns Explore, choose and organise sounds and musical ideas

5 Bang! We’re off and breathing fast. Moving! Racing! Fast fast fast! Running! Chasing! Towards the end. Puffing! Panting! Around the bend. Look left and right I’m in the clear. Finish line! Repeat the pattern to create an ostinato Explore other sounds and organise them around the poem. Remember to encourage imagination and control. Record using invented signs and symbols.

7 Key Stage 2 Music They improvise, and develop their own musical compositions, in response to a variety of different stimuli with increasing personal involvement, independence and creativity. Pupils should be taught how to: Improvise, developing rhythmic and melodic material when performing Explore, choose, combine and organise musical ideas within musical structures
