11 Norwood Elementary Science © 2012 Effort – What moves a load. Energy – The ability to move an object. Force – A push or a pull. Friction – A force that pulls or resists the motion of two objects in contact with each other. Fulcrum- The hinge, or pivot point, for a lever (rigid bar). Gears- Wheels with teeth. Inclined Plane- A slanted surface used to slide or roll an object uphill or downhill. Lever – A rigid bar that has a pivot point, or hinge. Load – An object being moved. Matter – Any substance that has a mass and takes up space. Solar Prototype – A model that is rebuilt with an improvement. Pulley- A wheel with a groove. Simple machine – A tool or device that make a task easier to do. Wheel – A circular frame with spokes, or a solid disc, that spins on an axis. Work – When a force moves an object over a distance.
