3 The context for health promoting schools 1995: WHO set out definition of a Health Promoting school. Scottish executive - all schools to become health promoting by December 2007. 2002: Scottish Health promoting schools unit established to offer strategic and practical support to schools and local authorities. 2004: Being Well-Doing Well: a framework for health promoting schools in Scotland 2004: HMIe published ‘How good is our school?-The health promoting school’ September 2006: Launch of Grampian Health Promoting schools Accreditation scheme in Aberdeen -all schools in Moray, Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire expected to reach committed stage by end of 2006-07 session

8 The health promoting school in practice Health coordinator appointed, school health working group formed Health and well being whole school action plan Priorities chosen after consultation with whole school community Audit developed Action plan developed and implemented Action plan reviewed and evaluated. Process starts again with next priority area

10 Food and Health Food and Health policy written and distributed to staff Breakfast Club opened New water machines installed Healthy vending machines replace coke machine Food services in canteen revamped Audit 2006

11 SHAW Bronze award gained 2004 Silver award 2006 Activities for staff Food and health improvements Information on health topics Mental health input – stress survey, raising awareness inservice, counsellors for staff, chill out room.

13 Mental Health Framework Pilot Project (or boy! Do we need a snappier name for this!!) 2005: LHS asked to participate in major pilot project in response to framework document.Pilot involves whole ASG area, children and young people from Nursery to S6 as well as all parents, staff from schools and associated partner agencies

14 The plan Phase 1: Raising awareness – pupils, staff and parents Phase 2: Training cohort – 4 days ASIST and introduction to Mental health in young people and to specialist CAHMS team. Phase 3: providing ongoing support and toolkit

15 The future Next 2 priority topics = Tobacco, alcohol. Action plans to be implemented and reviewed over this session. Maintenance plans in place for food and health, physical activity and mental health. Plans to be constantly reviewed and developed MHFPP still ongoing. Complete pilot and roll out to ASGs in Moray Presenting on MHFPP across Scotland – Aberdeen, Stirling, Edinburgh, Inverness.
