2 What is a resume? Why use one? Do you have too use one? What goes into it? At the end of this ppt. You should have enough notes that you could write an effective resume. Don’t rely on asking me what goes into a resume later.

4 Why is good resume development important? Understanding the reviewing process  HR deals with 10s of applications per vacancy  Intense time pressures and deadlines  HR makes its first decision on your app by scan reading your resume  Initially we are searching for a few KEY words in your resume  Time is precious and if they have trouble navigating your resume it will be discarded  HR will not give you the benefit of doubt – Why?  HR doesn’t know YOU so your resume presentation will reflect on you and the work they can expect from you – So What should you not have on a resume?  Processing resumes is tedious, so if you make their life easier they will instantly take a positive attitude towards you.

5 Poor Presentation can…. Hide your most important information from HR Stop your resume from being read fully. Build a negative impression of you. Display a belief that your work will be of poor quality. STOP your application from moving forward.

6 Good Presentation can…. PPPPull the HR’s attention to your resume. CCCConveys you possess more skills than what is listed. CCCCreates transitions to guide HR to relevant areas of history in your resume. IIIInstantly gives positive feedback. GGGGets YOU an interview!

7 Tips ► Well spaced and visually attractive ► Be concise  Use bullets  Only 1 sentence on the entire thing ► Use POWER words ► Check and re-check for errors ► Have someone else critique your resume ► Select quality bond paper (light color)  Very important  Go to kinko’s or somewhere to get copies. ► Use letter quality or laser printer ► Mail in a 9” X 12” envelope  Don’t fold it!!!!!!!

9 Don’t………  Type resume above your name  State your reasons for leaving a job  Use abbreviations  Write lengthy explanations  Use multiple fonts  TNR  Arial  Include a photograph  Mention personal data (height, weight, age, dob, marital status, religion, race, sex)

10 What goes into an EFFECTIVE Resume?  The basics (at the top) Name, address, city, state, ZIP code, telephone number with area code, cell number and e-mail address.

15 Cover Letters Each original letter must accompany the resume. Your present information Person’s name and title Dear…. 3 paragraphs The reason for writing, position you are applying for, source you learned of opening, (or interest in that field)

16 Cover Letters continued…….. 2 nd Paragraph Why you are interested in the position or organization and its products or services. Relate your background or preparation. Point out accomplishments, work experience and qualifications for the job Mention information other than what is in the resume

17 Concluding Paragraph Refer reader to your enclosed resume and point out that it will summarize your qualifications, training and experience Ask for a personal interview Restate your interest and indicate an eagerness to meet personally and include your phone number
