SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 2 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context? m-LOCO: An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media : Mobile Ontology –Socially enhanced Pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 3 Introduction E-learning environments : –anytime anywhere –personalization :learner-centered Rapid growth of usage of mobile technologies in everyday life –  spontaneous and short study phases? E.g. repetition/test preparation/looking up details

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 4 Introduction  Context-aware learning systems – personalization : learner-centered + environmental factors (e.g. location, time of the day, delivery media) Representation Method:  Ontologies Goal: capturing and usage of contextual info in context-aware learning environments

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 5 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context ? m-LOCO:An Ontology-Based Framework –Delivery Media : Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced Pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 6 Ubiquitous Learning Context? Context = situational information –any info to characterize the situation of an entity relevant to user--application interaction Different application domains ~ different needs and requirements –  different interpretations of “context”

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 7 Ubiquitous Learning Context ?  mobile learning context = learning context captured with regards to its delivery medium, i.e., the mobile devices. –  Learning context = learners +LOs + pedagocial approach

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 8 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO:An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media : Mobile Ontology –Socially enhanced Pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 9 m-LOCO Our proposed framework : built on top of an existing ontology-based model, LOCO

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 10 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO: An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 11 Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology New devices ~ new capabilities/features –  new vocabularies  ontologies CC/PP (W3C) + UAProf (OMA) Specifications

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 12 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO:An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 13 Socially-enhanced SRL “any time, any place”  self-regulatory skills Zimmerman’s Model also socially productive within communities of practice Performance Self- Reflection Forethought

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 14 Socially-enhanced SRL

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 15 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO:An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 16

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 17 Context Capturing a LO repository + a context repository –  each LO in LO repository ~ context data in m- LOCO based repository of LOC How to capture this context-related data? LO selection from the LO repository by learners System intelligently suggests and delivers LOs to learners  gather and store all related contextual data in LOC Repository.

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 18 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO:An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 19 Usage Scenarios : Q1 utilize the already available context data in m-LOCO repository

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 20 Usage Scenarios : Q2 pair a learner during each activity with peers who are directly/indirectly linked to her in her social connections and, – are performing the same activity (e.g. performance) –in the same subject domain

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 21 Usage Scenarios : Q2

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 22 Usage Scenarios : Q3 learner is asking for assistance/help for a specific topic during an activity enhancing social collaboration ? refer the learner to those peers in her social links –whose level of skill makes them eligible to temporarily play the role of an assistant –in that subject domain

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 23 Usage Scenarios : Q3

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 24 Outline Introduction Ubiquitous Learning Context Models m-LOCO:An Ontological Framework –Delivery Media: Mobile Ontology –Socially-enhanced pedagogy Context Capturing in m-LOCO Usage Scenarios Summary and Future Study

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 25 Summary and Future Work To realize the requirements of ubiquitous learning contexts –  m-LOCO :an ontological mobile learning framework :enhances an already existing ontological framework with 2 ontological extensions

SWEL WORKSHOP@ITS 08 Ontology-based Learning Resource Repositories 26 Summary and Future Work Further investigating of the implementation of this approach and its integration into an operational learning environment. Evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed framework
