4 What do they do? The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about The predicate tells something about the subject. Example: Judy {runs}. Judy and her dog {run on the beach every morning}.

7 A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate.

11 Compound Subject When a sentence has two or more subjects, it's call a compound subject.

12 Compound Subjects These types of compound subjects are treated as plural and take a plural verb: Dolphins and elephants are highly intelligent creatures. Eating, sleeping and reading are enjoyable activities. Both men and women can enjoy yoga. Chocolate and strawberry are my two favorite flavors of ice cream. Furniture and paper are two uses for wood. Roses, gardenias and jonquils are beautiful flowers. Both Tom and I are going on a cruise.

14 Compound Predicate A compound predicate tells us two (or more) details about the same subject

15 Compound Predicate Adam lives in Bangor and speaks Welsh. (This tell us two things about the subject (Adam).) The telegram was late but contained exciting news. They need to absorb nitrogen and keep above 20 degrees. Marcel ate dinner and then watched a movie. The ducks flew overhead and landed in the water.

20 A compound sentence has more than one part that can stand alone (independent clauses). Independent clauses are connected by coordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs or a semi-colon.

31 Conjunctive Adverbs “float” Conjunctive adverbs are sometimes called “floating” adverbs because they can be positioned at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a clause.

32 CONJUNCTIVE ADVERB: AT THE BEGINNING, IN THE MIDDLE,AT THE END Bob is handsome; moreover, he is rich. Bob is handsome; he is, moreover, rich. Bob is handsome; he is rich, moreover.

33 Semicolons “If the relation between the ideas expressed in the main clauses is very close and obvious without a conjunction, you can separate the clauses with a semicolon” (Little, Brown Handbook, 9th Edition, p. 361).

36 A complex sentence has at least two parts: one that can stand alone and another one that cannot The part that cannot stand alone is linked to the rest of the sentence by a subordinating conjunction
