10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 4 Project Data Collection Purpose(s) of facility Most facilities have multiple purposes … collect ‘em all! Criteria (what will make it successful) What gets measured gets done … document it! Areas & Sub-Areas Identify, assess and document For each area identified, specify: Equipment Sizes; weights; static & dynamic space; movement space; timing … Materials Sizes; weights; movement methods, conditions and space; timing … People Operating conditions; resting space; ergonomics; timing … Applicable Standards OSHA; NIOSH; local planning & zoning …

10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 5 End of Term: Project Presentation Project Presentation: Final Exam Period 10 min. presentation, 5 min. questions Due via e-mail: ½ hour before presentation Bring to class on a jump-drive Introduction (~ 1 min) Team Members & Responsibilities Problem Statement Design Approach & Issues (~ 2 min) Design Result & Discussion (4 – 5 min) Recommendations & Conclusion (~ 1 min) Questions (remaining time) Every member does a portion of presentation

10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 6 Project Presentation Format Cover Slide - With project title, date, course, and team members. Agenda – List major areas you will discuss. Introduction - Include an overview of the problem and operations. Problem Statement - Concise description of problems that are addressed by this project. What are constraints? Who is being affected?. Approach and Methodology - This can have sub-sections. Describe how you approached the problem - methods and procedures, assumptions, analysis techniques used, data sources. Why did you choose your approach? Results - Provide a summary of your findings and analysis. Some graphs and charts would be good in this section.

10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 7 Project Presentation Format Recommendations and Implementation - Describe and discussion your short-term and long-term recommendations. Show your design. Discuss benefits expected from implementing your recommendations, as well as any limitations. Conclusion and Acknowledgments – Close your presentation by acknowledging the people who provided help (acknowledging the instructor is NOT necessary), and address questions.

10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 10 Project Report Format Cover Page - With project title, and team members. Table of Contents - With page numbers. Executive Summary - One page or less. Brief description of problem(s), approach, main findings and recommendations. Introduction - Include an overview of the problem and operations. Briefly discuss the project thrust. Problem Statement - Concise description of problems that are addressed by this project. What is wrong? Who is being affected? Etc. Approach and Methodology - This can have sub-sections. Justify your approach. What other approaches were available to you? This section should contain a literature review, with pertinent references cited from your reference section. Describe how you approached the problem - methods and procedures, assumptions, analysis techniques used, data sources. Why did you choose your approach? Teams are expected to make and justify their own assumptions in areas where information provided is unclear or insufficient.

10/10/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 11 Project Report Format Results - Provide a summary of numeric and qualitative results. Discussion of results and their sensitivity to changes in assumptions. Some graphs and charts would be good in this section. Detailed printouts or calculations should be put in an appendix. Note, all pertinent information must appear within the body of the report. The reader should only need to refer to the appendices to get more detailed information. Recommendations and Implementation - Describe a clear list and discussion of your short-term and long-term recommendations. Follow this with an implementation plan.
