Nationalism and Revolution

Revolution n In n In Latin America

What inspired the Latin American Revolutions? nEnEnEnEnlightenment ideas –A–A–A–American Revolution –F–F–F–French Revolution Keep in mind that we can trace the roots of the Enlightenment back to the Renaissance and Reformation

The social classes Peninsulares Creoles Mestizos and Mulattos Indians and Africans Remember when you see a pyramid representing the social classes it is a rigid class structure!

Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin are the two most prominent independence leaders in Latin American history. Bolivar Martin

Bolivar and San Martin combined their armies in 1822 and Bolivar led the combined forces to victory over the Spanish freeing all of Spanish South America (1824). Figurative Representation?

By 1824 all of Spain’s Latin American colonies had gained their independence. Santo Domingo -Ouverture Mexico - Hidalgo & Morelos South America - Bolivar & Martin

Look at this representation of the areas Bolivar was trying to unite what were some of the obstacles he was confronted with?

After freeing the former colonies from Spanish rule Bolivar attempted to create a United Grand Colombia. However, a combination of various factors spelled the end for Bolivar’s dream. ++ += The End of Grand Colombia

The combination of geographic factors, rival factions, and ambitious local leaders spelled the end for Bolivar’s Grand Colombia. The geography of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia hindered Bolivar’s efforts from the beginning. The great distances involved, dense rainforests and high mountains of this region made travel and communication very difficult. This alone made the unification of these widespread areas a very daunting task. Furthermore, the unwillingness of local leaders to surrender control along with the presence of rival factions made unification unlikely. In the end the geographic factors combined with political obstacles made Bolivar’s vision of a United Grand Colombia an unattainable goal.

As with all Revolutions and/or Independence movements the Latin American Revolutions were caused by the “Recipe for Revolution” for SOCIAL POLITICALECONOMIC DISSATISFACTION
