Research Process JFK Model Teacher’s Edition

Steps to complete prior to beginning this unit Make necessary copies Reserve the computer lab Discuss with the media specialist a time to come to your class to discuss search engines

Topic Presidents A broad topic was chosen to teach that narrowing a research topic is necessary Show this slide on the student’s version with the white board open Write students’ suggestions on how research can be accomplished on this topic Proceed to the next slide after the students see the topic is too broad

Narrow the Topic Show this slide on the student’s version with the white board open Ask for names of specific presidents the students may want to know more about Write the names and explain again why it is necessary to narrow the topic Guide them to JFK Proceed to the next slide

Statement of Controlling Purpose Handout The purpose of this research is to determine what good things Kennedy did while he was president. This piece of the research process is very important. You must discuss the rationale of establishing a controlling statement prior to beginning research. We created a very basic statement to allow the students to begin to learn how to use the 12 keywords in writing their own statement for the next lesson.

After creating the statement of controlling purpose Discuss that after establishing the statement of controlling purpose the research can begin Questions must be written that will guide the research so as to answer the statement of controlling purpose

Guiding Questions What is a guiding question? What is the purpose of a guiding question? What makes a good guiding question?

Questions cannot be answered with yes or no too broad too narrow vague opinionated irrelevant

Questions should be open ended clearly stated relevant answerable

John F. Kennedy Show this slide with the white board open Let the students create guiding questions using the guidelines you have just established We have given you examples of questions that you may want to use if necessary If the students create good questions go over the next slide to discuss whether or not each question is relevant or not

Prime Questions Why? –Why is there a lack of support for skateboard parks? –Why are students not allowed to chew gum in school? How? –How can we change things for the better? Which is best? –Given the choices before us, which is most likely to do the most good? –Which plan is best? Which solution will work best?

Irrelevant Model Questions How old was he when he was shot? What was his favorite color? What was his favorite food? Where did he go on vacation? When did he get married?

Relevant Model Questions: Where did JFK attend college? What did he study? Why did he go into politics? What other jobs did he have before becoming president? Who are his family members and what do they do? Who influenced him?

Media Specialist (MS) It is best to have the MS come to the classroom to discuss the items on the next slide and have the students take notes The students must write on their Personal Information Form the usernames and passwords for each search engine Through Destiny students have access to all HCS libraries

Research with Librarian EBSCO DISCUS STREAMLINE DESTINY

Library/Computer Lab Schedule at least two days for students to complete the JFK research the guiding questions Instruct the proper use of the Information Grid

Possible end result (focus of the research) The purpose of this research is to determine what good things Kennedy did while he was president. What contributions came from Kennedy’s short time in office? This last sentence shows that after the process in this unit has been completed it is necessary to take the initial statement of controlling purpose and rewrite it. (this could begin a short introdcution of the formation of a thesis statement)
