10 www.unido.org Cleaner and sustainable production programme The cleaner production approach is a preventive, integrated strategy to Increase productivity in companies by ensuring a more efficient use of raw materials, energy and water. It promotes a better environmental performance through reduction at source of waste and emissions and it reduces the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle by the design of environmentally friendly but cost- effective products. The net effect is to give enterprises in developing and transition countries a more competitive edge, thereby facilitating their access to international markets.

11 www.unido.org Background about the UNIDO’s CP Programme Establishment and operation of 38 National Cleaner Production Centres and Programmes in developing countries and countries in transition Development of a UNIDO CP training toolkit and the UNIDO CP endorsed award for consultants, trainers and companies NCPC and Programmes in Europe and NIS Region: Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Russian Federation (Moscow and St. Petersburg), Serbia, Slovak Republic, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
