Jefferson’s Dreams Made Real! “Manifest Destiny”

T-Jeff’s Dream! …”empire of liberty”… stretching coast to coast…This is why I bought Louisiana!...now I’m in the future fighting a robot Alexander Hamilton? This must be a dream!

Manifest Destiny! Term originally used to describe annexation of Texas – “the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” Americans seize the phrase “manifest destiny” to explain the obvious destiny to expand from coast to coast Conflicts arise with natives who already populate western lands

Trails West: Santa Fe Trail 780 miles from Independence, MO to Santa Fe, NM Spring 1821-1860’s, traders load trade goods (cloth, knives, guns) and head west to Council Grove Kansas Meet up with other traders and form large groups of wagons for protection from native attack Once in sight of Santa Fe, teamwork ends, free-for-all to be first to get in there

Trails West: Oregon Trail 1836, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman set up Methodist mission schools to educate natives in Oregon Territory Prove that wagons can travel the 2000+ mile Oregon Trail (Independence, MO to Portland, OR) Send letters east praising fertile soil, climate; attracts lots of settlers Some travel by wagon, others pushing carts by hand Oftentimes settlers travel in large groups for protection from natives and for company Here’s a videovideo

Trails West: Mormon Migration In 1827, Joseph Smith establishes Mormon church Originally settled in Nauvoo, Illinois (western edge, on Mississippi River) but when some in area print protests against polygamy, Smith busts up printing press and is jailed, where he is murdered by anti-Mormon mob Successor Brigham Young leads followers outside the boundaries of the United States – follow Oregon Trail into Rockies, turn SW, and settle near Great Salt Lake Hand out plots of land based on family size, but share in common water and timber resources – establish flourishing Mormon community

Quick Recap
